  2. In your classroom, you have this very bright and outgoing student. As the year unfolds this student's grades begin dropping and they become quiet and unresponsive to you and the classmates. How would you confront this situation? What would be the best way to handle this without losing the student? Do you think what you have chosen to do would be the best way to solve this problem or could there be others?

  3. You are standing in the hall of a school. You overhear a conversation between two girls. One is telling the other that she is planning to run away from home. She can't take it anymore. Her parents are really being hard on her and she is leaving. Think about this: What would you do? Would you choose the best course of action? How could you handle this without making the situation worse?

  4. Jenny is poor and wears worn-out clothes to school. Some students make fun of her. She feels so hurt by their remarks that she often stays home from school to avoid them. As her classroom teacher, what are some ways you might address her needs?

  5. Spencer’s mother can’t go to his science fair because she has to work. When he trips Jodie during class the next day and calls her names, your students are asked why they think Spencer mistreated her. What are some reasons they might have given?

  6. Kyle has a weight problem. His classmates make fun of him and he is a loner. He is depressed and has had several aggressive outbursts towards his peers within the last few weeks. How might you approach this child and offer him support?

  7. While performing lunch duty in the cafeteria, you overhear a group of girls tell another girl that she smells like a garbage dump. They begin calling her “Smelly Nelly”. What is the best approach a teacher can take to address this situation?

  8. Darlene, a middle school student who receives special education services, often calls herself "dumb" when talking to other students. Darlene's teacher wants to say something to Darlene about it, but isn't sure what to say and how to say it. What would you do?

  9. Elena, who is teaching a seventh grade social studies lesson, doesn't know how to respond when one of her students asks her if she thinks it's ok for two men to be married to each other. How might you address this, keeping in mind all of the changes and challenges adolescents are facing at this age?

  10. In your fifth grade math class, the new student Leon spends most of his time disrupting class and getting sent to the office. After speaking to the other teachers on your team, they share the same situation occurring in their classes. What might be some of the reasons for Leon’s behaviors? How would you approach Leon? What would the conversation to his mother sound like?

  11. Upon returning from winter vacation, you notice an African-American honor student, hanging around a different crowd. After a few weeks his grades fall and he smells like cigarette smoke every morning when he arrives at school. What might be the reasons for the change in his friends and behavior? How should you approach this situation?
