  1. Bone Morphogenetic Protein By: Kim Stephens

  2. What is Bone Morphogenetic Protein? • Stimulates a patient's own cells to induce the formation of bone and cartilage • Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2, or rhBMP-2 • Generates and repairs bone faster and more reliably • Latest in bone growth enhancement

  3. Changing Points 1965: Dr. Marshall Urist, UCLA Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Los Angeles, CA discovered that the proteins needed to heal bone was inside bones 1997: First clinical trial with 11 patients 2001: New Hampshire Spine Institute

  4. Applications • Available in an oral form • A supplement for bone and joint health Regenerative Medicine: • Delivered to the site of the fracture • Released gradually to allow bone formation • Delivery in a purified collagen matrix

  5. Potential Applications • Osteoinductive characteristics make BMPs valuable as an alternative to bone grafts • Other methods of delivering BMPs to patients are undergoing evaluation • Non-skeletal tissues • Organogenesis

  6. Advantages Disadvantages BMP has only been FDA approved for one type of spinal fusion Expensive Side effects are not fully understood • Less pain, shorter hospital stays • More rapid return to a normal life • As effective as bone grafts • Eliminate the need for bone transplantation • Avoids the potential side effects and complications of bone harvesting or grafts

  7. Future • Use of BMP will potentially extend beyond skeletal disease and injury • Approval from the FDA to use BMP’s for dental work • Better understand these proteins and their benefits
