  3. Journey so far in Junior Phase Broad General Education (BGE) covering 8 curricular areas in S1 Personalisation and Choice at end of S1. Discrete subjects but still BGE in S2 Personalisation and Choice leading to specialisation in S3 continued into S4

  4. S3/4 Curriculum English – 4 periods Maths – 4 periods Physical Education – 3 periods Religious and Moral Education – 1 period Personal and Social Education – 1 period 5 choices @ 3 periods – 15 periods Total = 28 periods

S4 Qualification Courses Maths, English, P.E. and 5 choices will all lead to National Qualifications at level 3 or 4 or 5 One exception is Woodworking Skills who will now sit Practical Craft Skills Intermediate 1 All external assessments, where required, will take place in May 2014 – no bypass to Higher

Active and independent learning through self and peer evaluations, reflecting on learning, setting targets, evaluating their own progress. A blend of classroom approaches including practical and experiential learning through fieldwork; group work; whole class learning and teaching; discussion and debate; outdoor learning. Collaborative learning: learners can work in groups and with others locally, nationally and internationally; inter-curricular projects with other subject areas. more…. AC – DHT 3

Space for personalisation and choice: learners may choose their assignment topic and research methodology, including field work. Applying learning. Embedding literacy and numeracy skills: researching and presenting information; evaluating; communicating. AC – DHT 4

NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELLNational 4 and 5 What skills will be developed? - some examples from maths Understanding and applying mathematical skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. Simplifying and solving problems. Selecting and applying mathematical techniques to real-life contexts. Analytical and evaluative skills. Logical reasoning skills. Creativity and the ability to think in abstract ways. (12 separate skills are identified and listed) AC – DHT 5

  11. NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELLNational 4 and 5 How will it be assessed? At National 5 – most subjects follow a pattern of: Assignment + Question Paper (exam). Firstly – pupils must pass each of the units (through unit tests in class time). Each unit is assessed as pass/fail by the teacher using SQA guidelines. This may be evidenced in a portfolio of work. This assessment is then verified by external moderators to ensure a national standard. AC – DHT 6

  12. NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELLNational 4 and 5 How will it be assessed? At National 5 – most subjects follow a pattern of: Assignment + Question Paper (exam). Secondly – by assignment. This may require learners to research a topic. Thirdly - by sitting an exam (which may be in 2 parts). These course assessments will be marked by the SQA and Graded from A to D. National 5 progresses onto Higher AC – DHT 7

  13. NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELLNational 4 and 5 How will it be assessed? At National 4 – most subjects follow a pattern of: Course units and an Assignment (added value unit). Assignment. This may require learners to research a topic or carry out an investigation (mostly in class time). These unit tests and added value units will be marked by the class teacher and moderated by the SQA. National 4 progresses onto National 5 AC – DHT 8

  18. PHYSICAL EDUCATIONNATIONAL 4 and 5 The Added Value Unit at National 4 is based on Taking Part in Physical Activities, Factors Impacting on Performance and Performance Skills. All 3 units must be passed to gain an award at National 4 level Course is 3 Units. Assessment at National 5 is based on Performance Skills (60%) and a Portfolio of written work (40%) submitted to the SQA in March There is no question paper examination at National 5

  19. What is a Profile? A profile is a snapshot of a young person’s best achievements at a given point in time By completing their profile the young person will increase their self-esteem, improve their motivation, and thereby improve their learning. This is integral to the overall Curriculum for Excellence aims of raising attainment, reducing the achievement gap and preparing for the future

  20. The Profile Is the student’s work, facilitated by teachers who know them well Is a positive document, where students reflect on aspects they are perhaps proud of, including achievements beyond school and other awards It provides an opportunity to further recognise achievement

  21. The Profile The student has ownership of the profile and it contains the information that they choose to share with others A copy goes to the parent/carer, and a copy is kept in School No Next Steps

A learner statement with best achievements A place to record certificates and awards Information on progress and achievement in literacy and numeracy, and in health and wellbeing Information on progress and achievement across all curricular areas One A4 sheet (both sides completed)

  24. Next steps… S3 students are in the process of completing their profiles during their PSE period. Profiles will be issued with the S3 Report on Friday 7th June

  25. PROVISIONAL FOURTH YEAR TIMELINE 2013/2014 National 5 prelims will be in January 2014. Pupils will sit prelims over a 3 week period. Week beginning Monday 13th January will be a study leave week for all S4. Reports will be issued before the February break. Parents night provisionally Tuesday 25th February.

  26. PROVISIONAL FOURTH YEAR TIMELINE 2013/2014 Pupils currently have 8 subjects In S5/6 they will have 5 subjects. Course Choice evening for S4 and S5 provisionally Tuesday 4th March. Course Choice forms to be returned provisionally Tuesday 25th March. National 5 exams start at the end of April.
