  1. Expressions & Functions Foldable Created by: D. Encarnacion 11/16/11

  2. Fold paper into thirds. Place title in each section. Algebraic Expressions Coordinate Plane Functions

  3. Let’s work on the Algebraic Expressions column • Definition – A math sentence that contains variable(s), #’s, and operation(s). • examples: • Evaluate Expressions • Plug in values for given variable and follow order of operations. • Write an expression • From words: identify the variable, operation(s) and values (#’s) • From tables/ graphs: plug in the values to find the solution Which questions from the pretest are examples of this section?

  4. Let’s work in the center section – Coordinate Plane + • Identify and plot • x-coordinate moves left (-), or right (+) • y-coordinate moves down (-), or up (+) • Ordered pair (x-coordinate, y-coordinate) OR - + - (X,Y) ordered pair • Relations • Domain = x-coordinates, Range = y-coordinates • Point on a line • Plug in the x and y-coordinates in variables, see if true Which questions from the pretest are examples of this section?

  5. Final column - Functions • Find the nth term • 1) Create a function table (AKA “T-chart”) • 2) Find common difference “the pattern” in the range column • 3) Multiply by variable “n” • 4) Plug in a domain for n to see if you need to add, subtract, or leave alone. • 5) Check your work • Make function table • Plug in the domain for x value in the function rule, then put solution in the range side of the table. • Write a function • From words: identify the variable, operation, equal sign, and values (#’s) • From table/ graph: Just like nth term • Find the function value “evaluate” • Plug in the # for the x in the function rule and solve. Which questions from the pretest are examples of this section? • Continuous Functions vs. Discrete Functions • domain are real #’sdomain are integers • Linear Functions vs. Nonlinear Functions • form a line form a curve • domain & range have domain & range don’t • constant change have constant change
