Backround Polish-German cross-border co-operation in the field of Life Science and Biotechnology in the Baltic Sea Region is very low In the Szczecin Region marginal existence of networks between research and industry First approaches of BioCon Valley to network the regions: - D-Pl Biotech Forum 2002, BioTechnikum Greifswald, Germany D-Pl Networking Day 2006, Szczecin, Poland Study „Biotechnology in Poland“, 2006 Conclusion: Existing potential, but very little developed

Project targets: Systematic collection of actors and competencies in research and industry in the region of the University towns Greifswald and Szczecin Demand-oriented networking of cross-border research and development in the field of Life Science Mobilisation of international EU-joint research projects Strengthening the economic use in Start-ups and SMEs If required extension of cross-border co-operation in the entire South Baltic Region („Proof of concept“)

Greifswald: • University of Greifswald, founded 1456, 11.901 students • Med. Fac.: 1.696 students • Math. Scientific. Fac. (Bio, Pharma, Chemistry): 2.963 students • Leibniz-Institut für Plasmaforschung und Technologie(INP), about 140 employees, 2 spin-offs • Friedrich Löffler Institute for Animal Health, Island of Riems, about 330 emloyees, until 2010 about 140 more employees

Methodology / Instruments Contact point: Systematic und detailed collection of key personnel in research and industry within the region Linking of compatible co-operation partners Activation and mobilisation of economic potential international conference, which gathers the main focus of the project and which takes into consideration the co-operation interests with the following priorities: „Life Science Forum“ – Presentations in the domain of basic research, applied sciences and technology transfer in research and industry „Life Science Partnering“ - opportunity to meet and find partners in the field of research and economy „Life Science EU Workshop: How to write a successful FP7 Proposal?“ PR (Internet platform, idw-online, cordis, alphagalileo)

Expected results: This Project should serve: To collect and link potentials in research and industry in the University towns of Greifswald and Szczecin, To connect cross-border young start-up companies and centres of research as well as To exploit specific opportunities offered by the EU To strengthen research and economy within the regions and to boost the international competitiveness (“critical mass“) under the premise of sustainability
