  1. Welcome Back!!!Pre Calculus GTMonday, August 27, 2013A Day • Find your seat by matching your clue with a number on one of the desks. • Good luck!!!

  2. First Day Stuff • Attendance • Seating Arrangements • First assignment – read syllabus and get signed. Due tomorrow!!!

  3. Pacing & Homeworks • It will go fast – ask for help as SOON as you feel yourself getting lost. • Homework given everyday – odds from text will be assigned so CHECK your answers BEFORE you come to the next class • After going over problems with your groups, I will go over group questions and then we will do a Homework Check. • WOW – assigned every Friday and due the following Friday • Each class will end with an Exit Slip – notes allowed but done individually.

  4. Completing the Square & Conic Sections - Circles Objectives: The SWBAT complete the square and factor quadratic expressions The SWBAT find the standard form of a circle and identify its center and radius. Hwk #1-2:Complete both worksheets, complete First Week Checklist

  5. What exactly is completing the Square? • You may remember the procedure but do you know why we do what we do? • Let’s take a simple example:

  6. Algebra Tiles represents represents represents

  7. Document Camera Algebra tiles

  8. So to complete the square… • Factor: We take half of the middle term and square it!

  9. Find the value c to complete the square:

  10. But what if leading coefficient isn’t one?

  11. Document Camera Algebra tiles

  12. Don’t forget! • So if the leading coefficient is any other value than 1 you will need to divide or factor out that value 1st!!

  13. Classwork – Find a partner  • Complete a few of each section of the worksheet. It includes practice problems like we just reviewed as well as some factoring problems. • Don’t forget when factoring to always look for a GCF 1st!! • Finish the rest for homework.

  14. Question: • What shape would I get if I rotated a diagonal line about the y-axis 3-dimensionally?

  15. Conic Sections and Play-Doh • Work with the person next to you. • Get your Play-Doh and a playing card • Each person needs to make a cone • Use your card to make the cuts on the next slide through your cone. Identify the resulting shape.

  16. Type of Cut Through 1 cone, parallel to the base Through 1 cone, not parallel to the base, does not intersect base Through 1 cone, not parallel to the base, intersects base Through 2 cones (one is inverted on the other), perpendicular to the base Through the cone’s vertex only Plane tangent to cone Shape Circle Ellipse Parabola Hyperbola Point Line Fun with play-doh

  17. Types of conic sections:

  18. Four types of conic sections

  19. Circles • A circle is the set of all points P(x,y) in a plane that are r units, called the radius, from a point called the center (h,k) • The general form: • Center = (h,k) Radius = r

  20. 1) Find the center and the radius of the circle.

  21. 2) Find the center and the radius of the circle.

  22. 3) Find the center and the radius of the circle.

  23. 4) Find the center and the radius of the circle.

  24. 5) Find the equation of the circle that has: • Center ( 3, -1) and radius = 3

  25. Exit Slip - Find the equation of the circle that has: • Center ( 4, -3) and passes through (2, -1)

  26. Classwork/Hwk: Complete both sides of the worksheet
