  1. Integrating Quotes Tags, Citations, and Quotes, Oh My!

  2. Importance • It is important to make a smooth transition from your own words to those of another source. Never simply drop a quotation into a paragraph. A quotation can never stand in a sentence by itself without an introduction. For example: • WRONG: Twain remarks on the evil of deception particularly the scam the King and Duke created. "It was a dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another." (Twain 306). • In this example, the reader does not know which character says the quote or if Twain said it himself and will become confused as a result.

  3. Tags • To avoid dropping quotes in, use Tags. These are phrases which precede the quotation. They may include the author’s or character’s name and a verb (argues, compares, suggests, demonstrates, points out, etc.). An example is the following: • RIGHT: Twain remarks on the evil of deception, particularly the scam the King and Duke created. Huck points out, "It was a dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another." (Twain 306).

  4. Filling in the missing parts • When a quote itself is an incomplete sentence, we want to fill in the missing parts in the preceding information. If the quote lacks a subject for instance, add one before the quote begins: • WRONG: Twain remarks on the evil of deception particularly the scam the King and Duke created. Huck says, "dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another." (Twain 306).) • Right: Twain remarks on the evil of deception particularly the scam the King and Duke created. Huck says it was a "dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another." (Twain 306).

  5. Filling in the missing parts • If the quote is just a few words, you may need to fill in most of the sentence (subject and verb) before the quote even begins: • Right: Twain remarks on the evil of deception particularly the scam the King and Duke created. Huck points out that people can be “awful cruel to one another." (Twain 306).
