Motivating and Retraining Staff Today you will learn: The methods a business could use to motivate and retain employees You will be successful if you can: AO1:State methods of motivation staff AO2: Explain how a business might motivate its staff and the benefits of it. AO3: For a given business scenario suggest a suitable method of motivation and justify your answer. Stretch: Business Guru

  4. AO1/2: State and explain how a business might motivate its staff & the benefits of it. • Read – Recall – Share – Research Recall: You have 3 minutes to answer as many questions as you can. Read: You have 4 minutes to read and memorise the information on remuneration methods on page 137. Question sheet Research: You have 4 minutes to go back to your seat and in green pen complete the question sheet using your text. Share: You have 2 minutes to ask people you do not sit next to help with unanswered questions.

  5. AO2: Explain the benefits of motivated staff Benefits of motivated workers Use emoticons to help explain the benefits to a business of having motivated workers.

  6. Non-Monetary methods Not all businesses want to use money as a motivation method. This is particularly true of small businesses (unit 1). • In 2s list as many methods you could think of to motivate staff without it paying them money. • Are all methods suitable for all businesses? • Discuss with people on your table why/ why not

  7. AO3: For a given business scenario suggest a suitable method of motivation and justify your answer. Exam Practice • Read the case study in front of you (yes it is the one from your mock exam). • The question: Jim cannot afford to give his assistant a wage increase. Explain how non-monetary benefits could be used to improve his assistant’s motivation. (6marks) • Look at the case study and highlight the issues his assistant has that is stopping him being motivated. • Using your highlighted points answer the question.
