  1. Law Codes, Types of government and leaders

  2. Dynasty • Rulers from a single family. For example China.

  3. Theocracy • Government in which rule is based on religious authority. For example Egypt.

  4. Feudalism • A political system in which nobles, or lords, are granted the use of lands that legally belong to the king in return for loyalty and military service to the king. For example Europe during Middle Ages.

  5. Legalism • A government based on the system of rewards and punishments. For example in China under Qin Shi Huangdi.

  6. Autocracy • A government that has unlimited power and uses it in an arbitrary manner. For example Qin Shi Huangdi.

  7. Monarchy • A government ruled by single by a person, called a king. For example, Hugh Capet.

  8. Aristocracy • A government ruled by a small group of noble, landowning families. For example in Athens.

  9. Oligarchy • A government ruled by a few powerful people. for example, Sparta.

  10. Tyranny • A government ran by a group of wealthy citizens who work for the interests of the ordinary people. Example – In Athens Solon and Draco.

  11. Democracy . • A government ruled by the people. Example, US.

  12. Direct Democracy . A form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives. For example, Athens under Pericles.

  13. Republic • A form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders. Through representatives. For example, ancient Rome.

  14. Dictatorship • A form of government in which a leader who has absolute power to make laws and command the army. For example, Julius Caesar’s government.

  15. Emperor • The ruler of an Empire. For Example, Augustus Caesar.

  16. Hammurabi’s Code • Law code created by the Sumerian Leader Hammurabi based on the concept of an eye for an eye

  17. Moral law codes delivered by Moses to the Jewish people during their exodus from Egypt The Ten Commandments

  23. The Magna Carta • The underlying principle of this document is that all must obey the law, even the king.

  24. Common Law • A unified body of law formed from rulings of England’s royal judges that serve as the basis for law in many English-speaking countries today, including the US.
