Monarchy • King or Queen rules • Can also be called and “emperor” • Rule is usually handed down the family line • The United Kingdom, which has a queen, is really a republic because the queen has virtually no political power. • Saudi Arabia
Dictatorship • Rule by one person (usually with help from close group of allies) • Very few dictators admit they are dictators; they almost always claim to be leaders of democracies. • The dictator may be one person, such as Castro in Cuba or Hitler in Germany, or a group of people, such as the Communist Party in China. (see next slide)
Oligarchy • Power rests in the hands of a small group
Democracy • The word "democracy" literally means "rule by the people." In a democracy, the people govern. • Direct democracy is nearly impossible • (every single person votes for every single issue, and each vote is equal)
Republic • A literal democracy is impossible in a political system containing more than a few people. • All "democracies" today are really republics. • In a republic, the people elect representatives to make and enforce laws. • The U.S.A. is known as a “constitutional republic”
Instructions for Enlightenment Rap • As a group, you will be responsible for coming up with a “rap” (or a poem for those less “hammy”) about an Enlightenment figure • The rap will need to show us what you’ve learned about the Enlightenment, in general, and then also some key facts about your person. • There will be a “performance” accompanied by your lyrics on a power point
Rap Roles and Requirements • Roles: • ALL Group Members: Read book section and additional material • ALL Group Members: Contribute to writing the rap • 2 people (or more): perform the rap • 1 person designs the powerpoint • 1 person makes the powerpoint • Requirements: • Rap AND powerpoint must show at least 3 key facts about the Enlightenment • Rap AND powerpoint must give audience a thorough description of your person • Powerpoint must have lyrics to follow along to during the performance.
