  2. Multicultural Center The purpose of the Multicultural Center is to recruit, retain, and graduate higher numbers of qualified under-represented students. Staff: 3 full-time, 2 part-time, 2 student workers, 1 student volunteer.

  3. HSI (MG3, MG5, MG6, CO1, SD5, SD6) A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as a non-profit institution that has at least 25% Hispanic full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment. Key Point Indicators At least 25% of full-time, undergraduate students are Hispanic Reference Point • Current: 24.6% Hispanic students. • Goal: Increase to 25% over the next two years BenefitsTitle V funds can be used for: Faculty development, administrative programs, development and improvement of academic programs, scientific or laboratory equipment, etc.

  4. HSI Efforts • Increased recruiting in Education Service Center Region XV, which is 51 percent Hispanic and includes 43 school districts in the San Angelo area • Increased advertising in Spanish language media • Coordinated the development of ASU brochures and Web pages in Spanish • Participated in recruiting fairs targeting underrepresented students and • Partnered with local Hispanic organizations to increase ASU’s visibility among Hispanics 

  5. Recruit, Retain & Graduate(MG3, MG5, MG6, CO1, SD5, SD6) Recruit, retain and graduate higher numbers of qualified under-represented students. Key Point Indicators Increase number of participants in the various outreach and retention programs Reference Point • Current: 665 participants in current outreach and retention programs. • Goal: Increase by 5% each year for the next three academic years.

  6. Recruiting Efforts • Recruit specifically in Del Rio and Eagle Pass Texas areas • Expand our advertising efforts to include Spanish language television and billboards in Spanish • Expand ASU FIRST (initial efforts- February 6, 2009 included over 300 area high school students from 30 school districts) • Continue with First Generation Scholarships • Expand translation into Spanish of ASU web-site and recruiting materials

Retention Efforts • Expanded counseling services for participants in the ASU Up and Coming scholars Program (the Fall 2008 semester resulted in an 82 percent retention rate for freshmen scholars versus 80.6 percent first time freshmen not in the scholars program) • Expand “First Generation” initiatives such as the R.A.M.S. (Raising And Meeting Standards) Mentor/Mentee Program. Comparative data: • Also, expand the ASU Host Family Program, continue the first-generation scholarships, continue the partnerships and grow the ASU FIRST (Finding Insight and Finding Success Together) Program.

  9. Additional Information • Co-host Holocaust program with Goodfellow AFB, and West Texas Collection • Over 750 students signed in at the temporary Multicultural Center (from Nov 08 to date) • Host campus tours in Spanish when requested • Host “Salsa y Salsa” nights twice a week

Future Goals • Supplement programming of multicultural events both on campus and off • Expand advising and counseling services for all Up & Coming Scholars • Revive the Foreign Language Festival (approximately 1600 students) • Provide diversity education for faculty, staff, and students • Expand marketing of the Multicultural Center and its mission • Continue to seek outside funding • Continue pursuing HSI status
