  1. Education on research using the large new facilities in Northern Europe for neutron scattering, synchrotrons, free electron lasers Education and training for optimum use of large scale research facilities Jesper Andersen Physical Sciences Director MAX IV Laboratory

  2. The brightest synchrotron light in the World Funding from Starts user operations in summer 2016 13 beamlines before 2018 ~26 beamlines when fully equipped in ~2026

  3. Northeast Lund, Sweden 2016 and onwards Science Village Scandinavia MAX-lab Ideon Medicon Village LU MAX IV

  4. Synchrotronradiationfacility as example of a largescale research infrastructure • USER FACILITY • Many beamlines each with advanced and specific method(s) • Provides outside users with experimental time • Access granted after peer review. Free of charge • Typically only a small fraction of proposals gets beamtime • Beamtime typically days not months Storage ring SUPPORTS DIVERSE SCIENCES X-rays used in many different areas of science Many universities, very diverse clientele Physics, chemistry, geology, biology, life-sciences, energy-sciences, archeology, paleontology, cultural heritage, food-science,……… Many scientific cultures (and educational systems) Beamline/experiments Users

  5. Diversity of users and areas: An example MAX-lab Users – Science areas • Diverse areas • Physics • Chemistry • Life Sciences • Biotechnology • Materials Science • Catalysis • Energy materials • Nano-science and technology • Environmental Sciences • Geology • CulturalHeritage • …

  6. Diversity of users and areas: An example MAX-lab Users - Overall statistics • User statistics: • ca. 2/3 < age 40 • Career starters • Many PhD students • Industry • Academia • International • Experienced senior users • ca. 25% female

  7. Diversity of users and areas: An example MAX-lab Users - Nationalities

  8. OPPORTUNITIES - CHALLENGES • Opportunities • Large facility for many outside users • Access to advanced and specific method(s) • Free access to beamtime via review • Potential in all areas of science • Challenges • Typically far away from university • No general knowledge of methods • Hard to get beamtime • Diversification (Universities, science, nationalities…) Several problems, no single solution Training and education is essential

  9. Challenge • Typically far away from university • Hard to get beamtime • Challenge • No general knowledge of methods • Diversification (Universities, science, nationalities…) • Solutions • Earmarked funding for travelling to facilities • Dedicated beamtime for education and training • For some methods lab-sources can be used for training • Solutions • Overview courses • Summer schools • University courses • Include synchrotron methods in university curricula • Directed hands-on courses • Summer schools • University courses • Academic credits in university programs Fully recognized education/training programs

  10. 3 examples of existing training efforts Long standing tradition for broad topic summer schools at MAX Lectures followed by demonstrations at MAX Focus on Nordic/Baltic students, ~30 per course Funding Nordforsk/VR/Others ~Biannually. Started 2007 UCPH + MAX IV + EMBL Hamburg Lectures followed by experiments at MAX-lab International attendance, Scandinavian majority 20-30 students for full course, typically 50 attend lectures EXAFS for Beginners February 10 – April 3 2014 SLU and MAX IV Annual course. Started 1996 at SLU Lectures at SLU, experiments at MAX , data analysis at SLU. 3 weeks Focus on Nordic/Baltic students, ~25 per occasion (2nd occasion 2014 was full after 1 day)

  11. Current solutions of education for large scale facilities Large scale research facilities Universities University educations National and international education and training programs

  12. Improved solutions of education for large scale facilities Large scale research facilities Universities University educations National and international education and training programs

  13. Optimum solutions of education for large scale facilities Fully recognized education & training programs National & international Large scale research facilities Universities University educations National and international education and training programs
