Ephesians: a focus on…

“A Jet Tour through the Minor Prophets”

His Church: United in Passionate Service

“One faith..” Ephesians 4:4,5

  • Zephaniah

  • Do you love the Holy Spirit?

  • Evangelicals tend to focus on the second person of the Trinity – the Lord Jesus Christ

  • We tend to focus less on the very important work of the Holy Spirit.

  • What do you know about the Holy Spirit?

  • Our Comforter and Helper (John 14:16, 26)

  • He can be tested (Acts 5:9)

  • He can be lied to (Acts 5:3)

  • He can be resisted (Acts 7:51)

  • He can be insulted (Hebrews 10:29),

  • He can be blasphemed (Matthew 12:31–32).

He is a guarantee for our future inheritance ephesians 1 14
He is a guarantee for our future inheritance – (Ephesians 1:14)

He seals our salvation – (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30)

He has…

intellect (1 Corinthians 2:11)

feelings (Romans 15:30)

a will (1 Corinthians 12:11)

He works (1 Corinthians 12:11)

He searches (1 Corinthians 2:10)

He speaks (Acts 13:2)

He testifies (John 15:26)

He teaches (John 14:26)

He convicts (John 16:8–11)

He guides us into the truth of God’s Word (John 16:13)

He regenerates (John 3:5)

He intercedes for us in prayer (Romans 8:27)

He glorifies Christ (John 16:14)

He directs our service to God (Acts 16:6–7)

  • All genuine followers of Christ have the Holy Spirit living in them!

  •  He is the personal stamp of God’s divine approval and ownership on you!

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 [NIV] - “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

  • What you say and do can “grieve the Holy Spirit of God”

  • “grieve” – literally means – “to make sad; to cause pain”

  • When we sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit

  • Ephesians 4: 22-24 [NIV] – “…put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

  • Now Paul gets specific about the type of behaviours that can “grieve the Holy Spirit”

    • wrong behaviourswe should be avoiding

    • right behaviours we should be living.

  • 1. Live Free from Deceit

  • Ephesians 4:25 [NIV] – “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”

  • Lying was as common in the ancient world as it is today.

  • Lying is more than just saying something false. It includes:

    • Exaggerations

    • Making promises we know we cannot keep

    • Betraying confidences

    • Flattery to get something we want.

  • Why is lying so wrong?

  • First: falsehood goes against the very nature of God Himself:

  • Psalm 31:5 – “O Lord, the God of truth”

  • John 14:6 – Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life”

  • John 14:17 – “…the Spirit of truth”

  • Second: lying destroys trust

  • Lack of trust disrupts the body of Christ because is tears down relationships.

  • Our unity depends on our ability to trust one another.

  • 2. Live Free from Anger

  • Ephesians 4:26 [NIV] - “’In your anger do not sin’: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”

  • “In your anger do not sin”from Psalm 4:4

  • Anger itself is an emotion – it has moral neutrality

  • There is a form of “good anger”

  •  God & Jesus demonstrated “righteous anger”

  • Paul is concerned about the sin that anger can lead to

  • Anger is dangerous because it is destructive

  • Anger is a self-centered emotion.

  • When we allow our anger to get control we “give the devil a foothold”

  • Jesus teaches us:

  • Matthew 5:22 [NIV] “…anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.”

  • Matthew 5:44 [NIV] - “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

  • Keep short accounts with people we feel anger towards.

  • We are called to be people of forgiveness and reconciliation.

  • Ephesians 4:26 [NIV] - “Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.”

  • James 1: 19-20 [NIV] – “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”

  • 3. Live Free from Theft

  • Ephesians 4:27 [NIV] – “He who has been stealing must steal no longer…”

  • To take something that does not belong to us is not a learned behavior  inherent in our sin nature

  • 10th Commandment: Do not covet anything that belongs to someone else.

  • 8th Commandment: Do not steal.

  • Robbery, shoplifting, identity theft are common forms of theft

  • Other forms of theft:

  • “borrowing” money from dad’s dresser without his knowledge

  • not paying fair wages to our employees

  • illegally downloading movies or songs from the internet

  • knowingly pocketing the clerk’s overpayment error in the department store

  • not claiming all our income on our tax return

  • God’s directive: v.27 “but [he] then must work, doing something useful with his own hands.”

  • The alternative to self-centered stealing is to work – to be productive people

  • Goal: v.27 – “that he may have something to share with those in need.”

  • God gave you the ability to earn income so you could help others in need.

  • What a revolutionary idea!

  • 4. Live Free from “Rot Talk”

  • Ephesians 4:29 [NIV] – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

  • “unwholesome” – in Greek  described spoiled fish or rotten fruit.

  • As believers, we need to watch our speech.

  • Rotten words: foul language; vulgarity; profanity

  • Contrast: v.29  ONLY use words that are helpful for building up others.

  • Rotten words include gossip, slander, criticism; words that tear down rather than build up.

  • Ephesians 4:15 - “…speaking the truth IN LOVE”

  • We are to usewords that are constructive, encouraging, instructive, uplifting

  • v.29 “according to their need”

  • words that are appropriate to help in a situation

  • v.29 – “give grace to those who hear”

  •  we receive God’s grace in salvation & for ministry so we can extend grace to others

  • Give the Holy Spirit respect through our obedience to the way God wants us to behave and speak.

  • Ephesians 4:30-32 [NIV] – “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

  • Get rid of that old wardrobe!

  • Let’s stop grieving the Holy Spirit

  • Be kind, compassionate – forgiving people following the model Christ has set for us.
