  1. The Influence of the Holy Spirit & the Word Ephesians 6:14

  2. Ephesians 6:14 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” • Revelation 1:16; 2:16; 19:15, 21 • 2 Thessalonians 2:8

  3. Introduction • There is much error regarding the Holy Spirit and the work of the Spirit • The Holy Spirit and the Word are identical in action and inseparable in their work on the human heart • The Holy Spirit inspired and revealed the Word • To say that the Holy Spirit works through the Word to influence the heart of man does no injustice to the Spirit • We will show in this lesson that whatever action is affirmed of the Holy Spirit is also true of the Word • We will compare the ACTION of the Holy Spirit and the Word

  4. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God – Rom. 8:16 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me – Jn. 5:39 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me– Jn. 15:26

  5. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. – John 14:26 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. – 2 Tim. 3:15-17

  6. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. • Jn. 16:8 (NKJV) Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. – Titus 1:9

  7. 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. – Jn. 3:5, 8 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. – Jas. 1:18 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. – 1 Pet. 1:23

  8. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. – Titus 3:5 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.– Jas. 1:21 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. – Acts 11:14

  9. That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. – Rom. 15:16 Sanctifythem through thy truth: thy word is truth. –Jn. 17:17 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. –Eph. 5:26

  10. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. – 1 Cor. 6:11 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. – Jn. 15:3 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. –Eph. 5:26

  11. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. – 1 Cor. 6:11 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. – Gal. 2:16 • So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. • Rom. 10:17

  12. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. – Rom. 8:9 • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. • Col. 3:16

  13. Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. • Acts 9:31 • For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. • Rom. 15:4

  14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. – Rom. 8:14 • Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. • Ps. 119:105

  15. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. – Rom. 15:13 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. – Rom. 1:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that ye may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man. – Eph. 3:16 (ASV)

  16. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. – Rom. 15:13 • For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. • Rom. 15:4

  17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. – Jn. 14:17 • Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. • Jn. 17:17 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. – 1 Jn. 5:6

  18. It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and [they] are life. – Jn. 6:63 (NKJV) • Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. • Jn. 6:68 • 50This [is] my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. • 93I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have given me life. • Ps 119:50, 93 (NKJV)

  19. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. – 2 Cor. 3:17 • And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. • Jn. 8:32

  20. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hearethsay, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. – Rev. 22:17 • Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. • 2 Thess. 2:14

  21. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, • 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. • Gal. 5:22-23 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. – Lk. 8:11, 15

  22. 16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. • 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. • Gal. 5:16, 25 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. – 2 Jn. 6

  23. Conclusion • The ACTIONS of Spirit and the Word are the same • The Spirit operates on the heart of man through the instrumentality of the Word • Not directly on the heart • But through the Word! • We have complete and authoritative revelation! • 2 Tim. 3:16-17 • All Truth was revealed to the Apostles as Jesus promised! • Jn. 16:13; 2 Pet. 1:3; Jude 3 • There is no need for “latter day revelations”!

  24. Jude 3 (NKJV) • “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” “The original Greek word hapax translated ‘once for all’ means that it is ‘of perpetual validity not requiring repetition’ (Vine, pg. 819). The faith delivered to the saints is of such quality that it is complete (‘perfect’– Jas. 1:25) and will not tolerate repetition or alteration. This means that any ‘revelations’ since the faith was given ‘once for all’ have not come from God but from the inventive minds of men. It further means that those who claim the ‘revelations’ and those who believe them are condemned. The warning is clearly given, ‘Whoever transgresses (goes ahead) and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.  He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son’ (2 Jn. 9).” – Billy Norris, Gospel Guide, Vol. 27, No. 12, December 1995

  25. Psalms 119:89 “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven”
