Diabetes in Asians • Epidemiological studies have revealed a rapidly emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes in Asia. • Asians develop type 2 diabetes on average 10-20 years earlier than Caucasians. • Diabetes and heart disease occurs at lower body weights in Asians. • BMI classifications are different for Asians compared to Caucasians; In Asians a normal BMI is 18.5 to 23.9 and obesity is a BMI greater than 27. • Type 2 diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, and in Asian populations insulin resistance is present even at relatively low body mass index (BMI). • Healthy diet, frequent exercise and maintaining a healthy BMI are all important elements in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes.
