  1. SA1 Mario KadastikOperations Director / SA1 activity leader BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  2. Outline • Introduction • Tasks in SA1 • Usage targets • Regional extension • Interoperability • Towards NGI-s • Conclusions • Q & A BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  3. Previously … BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  4. Introduction • SA1, the biggest activity in BalticGrid-II • 150 PM-s total (36% of total) • 1 080 000 euro (34% of total) • All partners active in this activity • The task of SA1 is to provide a good infrastructure for all researchers in the Baltic region, Belarus and beyond • Without SA1 there is no Grid. SA1 is responsible to provide the technical infrastructure, the services and the support for them BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  5. Tasks in SA1 • Central services • The primary aim of this task is to maintain central services for the Grid middleware • This includes the CA and RA network, the central resource brokers, file catalogs etc • It also contains the implementation and support of the tools developed in BalticGrid JRA1 activity • Maintenance and user support • This task includes a ticketing system as well as support personnel for site and users support (in cooperation with SA3) BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  6. Tasks in SA1 (cont) • Testbed operations • To provide preliminary testing of any new software updates and hence reduce the amount of unplanned downtime at sites • It is also used for tutorial purposes • Interoperability with other middlewares • BalticGrid project concentrated on gLite only • In addition ARC and Unicoremiddlewares are present in the region • In BalticGrid-II we try to unify these different communities by providing common support and possibly common tools BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  7. Usage targets • SA1 will provide the infrastructure on which to do science, the two main usage targets to measure the success of this are: • 25% of increase of CPU hour usage per six months • Total four periods, every time the target is for users to compute a quarter more • No fixed amount for the first period • 10% of increase per year in valid user certificates • Valid certificates should show number of real active users in the Grid • NB! SA1 will not provide the computations themselves, this is up to the scientists BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  8. Regional extension • In BalticGrid we had 6 countries • Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland (CERN) • In BalticGrid-II we have extended the region with two new partners from Belarus • Current situation in Belarus is similar to the Baltic States in the beginning of the BalticGrid project • The aim of SA1 is to help Belarussian partners in all technical aspects of setting up the Grid BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  9. Interoperability • Currently there are three main Grid middleware flavors in the region: ARC, gLite and Unicore • At this point none of them work together, which means, that there are always unusable resources once you have selected one of them • The objective of SA1 in BalticGrid-II is to try to unify these communities as much as possible • Starting with operational support for all middleware users • Hopefully during the lifetime of the project, a technical unification will also happen BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  10. Towards NGI-s Currently of the four countries of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus only Lithuania has a well established National Grid Initiative The aim is that after the end of BalticGrid-II project all of the above mentioned countries have a well established infrastructure which can continue on its own With regard to central services, we are already in a good shape, but there is plenty of work to be done BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius

  11. Conclusions SA1 is vital to project success Main priority is to provide a production quality infrastructure to scientists We have a lot of new ground to cover (Belarus and other middlewares) We need to be ready by the end of BalticGrid-II to continue as NGI-s as there is likely not going to be an extension project BG-II kickoff meeting, 13-15 May 2008, Vilnius
