  2. What do you need to know to create a detailed plan? • Classification of skill / technique • Strengths and weaknesses • Identified skill/technique for development • Length of plan (weeks/sessions) • Stage of learning • Practice styles • Methods of practice • Principles of effective practice

Classification of Hockey Elimination skill? • What technique did you focus on? • Open skill – not repeated exactly same way every time • unpredictable environment • externally paced • performance adapted to meet demands • Discrete (serial) – movement has clear beginning and end and many subroutines • Simple / complex? • Fine / Gross movement?

  4. Strengths and weaknesses? • What were your overall strengths in the game of Hockey? • Passing, control… • How do you know that? • What were your overall weaknesses in the game of Hockey? • Dodging/elimination skills

  5. Skill identified to improve? • What elimination skill was your weakness? • What was the main subroutine/s you had to improve? • What impact did this have on your performance? • What subroutines were a strength – how did this affect your performance?

  6. Weak Subroutines • Preparation phase • “I could not do the normal dribble, ball slightly on RH side” (Subroutine) • What effect would this have on your performance?

Effect • Awkward when dribbling, not balanced • Before attempting drag R-L I had to shift ball to RHS – too complex and lack of control-lose control/possession • If I did not transfer the ball R before doing R-L the defender would easily tackle me. This is because there is no feint to wrong foot and confuse the defender

Weak Subroutine from Action Phase • “I failed to plant RF + push off changing from FWD to side movement” – Effect? • Not balanced • Not enough power in push • Too close to defender – impact? • Lose control/possession of ball-runs away from me • Tackled by defender or I barge in to him and foul • Confidence levels drop

  12. Programme length • How long was your programme of work / plan of action / development training? • Weeks? Sessions? • 6 weeks • Each week = Double on Monday, Single period on Thursday

  13. Stage of Learning • What stage of earning were you at? • End of preparation start of practice • Practice STYLE needed to use at the start? • Fixed

Why Fixed practice style? • Although the fixed style of practice is more suited to developing closed skills because of its repetitive and predictable nature, it is also ideal for removing external influences and focusing on overcoming identified weaknesses in open skills at the preparation stage of learning.

  15. Benefits of Fixed style of learning • Repetitive • Predictable • Removes external influences • Focus on identified weak subroutines when in preparation stage

  16. METHODS of Practice for…. • Preparation Stage? - Shadow, Unopposed repetition drill • Practice Stage? - Opposed (passive) rep drill – combination drills, Opposed (active) rep drill – Pressure practices ie 3v2 at end of Practice • Automatic stage? - Small sided games

  17. Connecting Principles of Practice • SMARTER (Specific) • IPMWBOW (Weakness) • PERFECT (Thoughtful (Understanding)) • “Understanding what my weaknesses were from the movement analysis results, helped me to make my practice specific to my needs”

  18. Consider the following feature if answering a question on how practice is made effective, or what you know about principles of effective practice - SMARTER This uses similar knowledge that you should be aware of in relation to goal setting What does each letter of SMARTER stand for?

Specific – make your practice programme specific to improving your identifies weakness Measureable – use targets to track success in practice Attainable/Achievable – choose practices that suit your stage of learning Realistic – practices need to match the identified need and be achievable as noted above Time phased – be aware of how long to practice in terms of avoiding fatigue Exciting – make practice relate to the activity or use competition / targets Regular – practicing frequently is important to develop reinforcement / consistency in skill This information shows a description of principles of training

Different language is needed to develop an explanation of principles – this language begins to explain why practice should be following this structure Consider the following list of words: Intensity Progression Model Weaknesses Boredom Objective Work to rest ratio A strategy to remember them is to use the following sentence IPracticed Mainly With Boys Or Women

A further layer of language is needed to develop a discussion about principles of effective practice because you now need to outline the benefits that following this process might have on your performance. Purposeful Energetic Realistic Feedback / Focus / fatigue avoidance Error Free Competitive / Confidence Thoughtful (Understanding) Look at the first letter of the words and what do they spell out? PERFECT
