The Solar System. 3 rd Grade. The Solar system is the sun and the objects that orbit around it. The Sun is a star. The Sun is the center of the solar system. A planet is a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sky. The Solar System has nine planets.

  2. The Solar system is the sun and the objects that orbit around it.

  3. The Sun is a star. The Sun is the center of the solar system.

  4. A planet is a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sky. • The Solar System has nine planets. • Earth is one of the nine planets.

  6. The Inner Planets • The Inner planets are closest to the sun. -Mercury -Venus -Earth -Mars

  7. The Inner Planets are the warmest planets and have rocky surfaces.

  8. Earth • Earth is different from the other planets it has a watery surface. • Earth is the only planet with a lot of oxygen in the atmosphere. • Earth has plant and animal life.

  9. Outer Planets • The outer planets are colder than the inner planets because they are farthest away from the sun. -Jupiter -Saturn -Uranus -Neptune -Pluto

  10. Outer Planets are made mostly of frozen gases and have many moons.

  11. Other objects in the solar system • Asteroids are chunks of rock or metal that orbit the sun. • Comets are large balls of ice and dust that orbit the sun.
