  1. The SolarSystem a presentation by: Perry Van Boom Next…

  2. welcome to…. 6th grade Science! Next…

  3. STUDENTS: Although, you have little to no knowledge about this subject, you will be working independently on this activity. Next…

  4. Our objectives of this Lesson… To become familiar with: -three astronomical formations -the sun -the eight planets get ready to LEARN! Next…

  5. Learning Environment: Because you will be working by yourself at a computer station, first you need to know what the action buttons mean… Next slide Previous slide Main Menu Exit Next…

  6. MAIN MENU • Astronomical Formations • Practice! • Quiz #1 • The Sun • Practice! • Quiz #2 • The Planets • Practice! • Quiz#3

  7. Let’s Explore… ASTRONOMICAL FORMATIONS

  8. Orion’s Belt is made up of three stars located 1500 light years away. ORION’S BELT

  9. The Big Dipper is composed of seven stars ranging from 78 to 124 light years away. The formal name for the Big Dipper is Ursa Major. The Big Dipper

  10. The Little Dipper is made up of six stars. The formal name of the Little Dipper is Ursa Minor. THE LITTLE DIPPER

  11. Now, let’s practice what we’ve learned!

  12. Practice Question: How many stars make up “The Little Dipper”? When you have an answer, click anywhere on the screen to see if you are correct. If you said: SIX….. You are CORRECT!

  13. Now Let’s Test Our Knowledge About Astronomical Formations!

  14. Question #1: What is the formal name for “The Big Dipper”? A. Ursa Minor B. Major Ursa C. Ursa Major D. Minor Ursa

  15. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #1

  16. CORRECT! Ursa Major Is the formal name for “The Big Dipper”!

  17. Question #2: How many light years away is “Orion’s Belt”? 1500 500 1000 1200

  18. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #2

  19. CORRECT! “Orion’s Belt” is 1500 Light years away!

  20. Question #3: How many stars make up “The Big Dipper”? A. Six B. Ten C. Nine D. Seven

  21. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #3

  22. CORRECT! Seven stars make up “The Big Dipper”!

  23. Let’s Explore… THE SUN!

  24. The Sun is a giant star. Special cameras need to be used to take pictures of the sun (such as the picture shown). The sun is mostly hydrogen with about 10% helium and other elements. The SUN

  25. We think of the Earth as a huge place. The diameter of the Sun is about 100 times wider than the Earth as can be seen in the diagram at left. Our Sun is an average size star but it has 98% of all the mass of the solar system. Some stars are as small as the Earth while others can be 500 times bigger than our Sun. The SUN

  26. The earth, lit by the sun, casts a long, conical shadow in space. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes completely into the shadow. Just before the moon completely covers the sun, mountains on the moon allow a bit of light to peek through creating this beautiful diamond ring effect at the left. The SUN

  27. Now, let’s practice what we’ve learned!

  28. Practice Question: True or False: The Sun is 10 times bigger then the Earth. When you have an answer, click anywhere on the screen to see if you are correct. If you said: FALSE…. You are CORRECT! (The Sun is actually 100 times bigger than the Earth!)

  29. Now Let’s Test Our Knowledge About The Sun!

  30. Question #1: The Sun is made up mostly of what element? Oxygen Hydrogen Carbon Nitrogen

  31. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #1

  32. CORRECT! The Sun is made up mostly of HYDROGEN!

  33. Question #2: What blocks light from the Sun to hit the Earth in a Lunar eclipse? Mercury A large star Mars The Moon

  34. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #2

  35. CORRECT! THE MOON Blocks light from the Sun to hit the Earth in a Lunar eclipse!

  36. Question #3: How many times is the Sun wider than the Earth? A. 50 times B. 1000 times C. 100 times D. 70 times

  37. Sorry, Try Again. Back to Question #3

  38. CORRECT! The Sun is 100 times wider than the Earth!

  39. Let’s Explore… The PLANETS of our Solar System!

  40. Mercury is the smallest and innermost planet in the Solar System. MERCURY MERCURY

  41. Besides the Moon, Venus is the brightest natural object in the night sky. VENUS VENUS

  42. Earth is the only place in the universe where life is known to exist. EARTH EARTH

  43. Mars is known as the “Red Planet” because of its reddish appearance as seen from Earth. MARS MARS

  44. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. JUPITER JUPITER

  45. Saturn has a system of rings, consisting mainly of ice particles and dust. SATURN SATURN

  46. Uranus was the first planet discovered using a telescope. URANUS URANUS

  47. Neptune has a “Great Dark Spot” in its southern hemisphere. NEPTUNE NEPTUNE

  48. Now, let’s practice what we’ve learned!

  49. Practice Question: What is the furthest planet away from the Sun? When you have an answer, click anywhere on the screen to see if you are correct. If you said:NEPTUNE…. You are CORRECT!

  50. Now Let’s Test Our Knowledge About planets
