  2. Cardinal North Carolina designated the northern cardinal as official state bird in 1943. Cardinals are distinctive in appearance and song. They are known for their cheer cheer cheer , whit chew whit chew and purty purty purty whistles. Sings nearly year round and the male aggressively fights his 4-acre territory. The males are brilliant scarlet red and the female is buffy brown with with reddish wings . Both male and female have a jet black mask , pronounced crest and heavy bill.

  3. Honeybee North Carolina designated the honeybee as official state insect in 1973.The queen can lay up to 1500 eggs per day. Young worker bees are called house bees. Older bees are called field bees. The first bees were found in the fossil dating 40 million years ago. Empirical evidence suggests that honeybees dances to communicate the location of a nectar location to other honeybees. American Indians called honeybees white man’s flies.

  4. Southern Brook Trout North Carolina designated the Appalachian brook trout as the official state freshwater trout in 2005. They are sometimes called specks because of their unique spotted appearance. The southern brook trout is North Carolinas only native freshwater trout. They are a genetically distinct species of North Carolina. Cool, clean and pure water is what kind of water they live in.

Plot Hound North Carolina designated the plot hound as the official state dog in 1989. developed by a German man named Jonathan plot around 1750 as a wild boar hunting dog, the plot hound is a legendary hunting dog known as a courageous fighter and tenacious tracker with a spine tingling bugle like bark . The plot hound is athletic , muscular and agile in appearance with a smooth dense coat in almost every shade of brindle. The plot hound is only of 4 breeds in America.

  6. Channel Bass The Channel Bass was designated the official saltwater fish of N.C in 1971. The Channel Bass is usually found in large numbers along the tar heel coastal waters, Channel Bass have been found to weigh up to 75 pounds. The average weight is 30 to 40 pounds.

  7. Eastern Box Turtle • Made official state reptile in 1979 . • They can live to be over 100 years old. • The reason they have there name because when they hide their shell looks like a box. • They have bright markings on its shell and red or yellowish eyes .

  8. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail • It was made state butterfly in 2012 . • First drawn by John White . • Can be found in 25 other states. • Strong flyers • Has long tail

  9. Colonial Spanish Mustang The Colonial Spanish Mustang ( C . S . M.) was made the N.C state horse in 2010. They can be 13.1 to 15 hands tall. Some colors are Bay, Black, Gruella, Palomino and Isabella. They can weigh 700-1000 pounds. They can live 20-25 years.

  10. Gray Squirrel Gray Squirrels were made a state symbol in 1963. They can live 12.5 years in the wild. There are 2-3 babies in a litter. There are 2 litters each year. They eat acorns, beechnuts, baby birds and bird eggs.
