  1. Hypotheses

  2. The Environment • The survey was administered in a limited/focused environment • Survey participants are employed by or attend Northern Oklahoma College in Stillwater

  3. The Survey: Question 1 • I have a Facebook account I check regularly (2-3 times per week). • Younger respondents had the greatest distribution in responses, yet the majority of both age groups were likely to check their accounts regularly.

  4. The Survey: Question 2 • When I post on Facebook, it is to draw comments from friends; or when I post on Facebook, it is to amuse myself. • Results were largely divided, indicating both younger and older users post for diverse reasons.

  5. The Survey: Question 3 • I use Facebook as a networking tool. • The majority of respondents agreed they used the site for networking to some degree.

  6. The Survey: Question 4 • I use Facebook to reconnect with those from my past. • Younger respondents were more likely to use Facebook to reconnect with people from their past, while older respondents were divided, but tended to be heavier toward “strongly disagree”.

  7. The Survey: Question 5 • I personally know all of my Facebook friends. • The majority of older respondents agree they know the majority of their online friends, while younger respondents were less likely to personally know their online friends.

  8. Interesting trends • Sorting data by level of education, Question 4 • Undergraduates were more likely to use Facebook to reconnect with people from their past than other educational categories.

  9. Interesting Trends • Sorting data by level of education, Question 2 • Respondents with “some college” fell toward seeking comments; those with advanced degrees fell more toward posting to amuse themselves. College graduate respondents seek comments.

  10. Interesting Trends • Sorting data by level of education, Question 1 • Respondents who are currently pursuing college degrees were significantly more likely to check Facebook accounts with more frequency than their degree-holding counterparts.

  11. Conclusions • Although no trends confirmed my original hypothesis of younger generations using Facebook as an extrovert activity, with a more balanced distribution of responses than expected, responses were to the contrary for my hypothesis of older users seeking reconnection, as younger respondents were the ones who indicated using Facebook to “reconnect” with those from their past.

  12. Further Studies • Should this study be continued, I would focus the data sorting more on the level of education, as those were the sharpest divisions in responses. • Additionally, I would compare the NOC environment responses to a more broad sampling pool.
