  1. Pocket GPS Manager (PGM) -Brief Overview & Current Status- 2005-10-20 CSRC Semi Annual Meeting La Jolla, CA Michael Scharber (CSRC)

  2. Short Description PGM Client is a Java application (for desktops and PDAs) which, combined with the existence of a metadata repository, targets the elimination of paper “log sheets” from GPS campaigns, and provides a centrally-coordinated metadata context from which to plan, log and manage the “field” component of a GPS campaign. UCSD / SIO / CSRC

  3. The PGM Strategy UCSD / SIO / CSRC

  4. The PGM Strategy • Campaign planning and reconnaissance • Campaign setup using PGM Client Manager Mode • Campaign execution using PGM Client Technician Mode • Campaign quality control, reobservations, wrapup, using PGM Client Manager Mode & Technician Mode • GPS analysis using software of choice and metadata format of choice • Conversion of XML geodetic campaign template to an NGS B-File using gct2bbk • NGS project submission preparation, B-File completion, D-File generation, etc – using existing NGS software • NGS project submission NGS UCSD / SIO / CSRC

  5. Notes • A beta version of PGM Client was successfully used in production for the Yolo County, CA resurvey in July 2005. • A command-line executable - gct2bbk – is being developed by the CSRC (Mike Potterfield) to enable a complete (or piecewise) conversion of a geodetic campaign template (XML) used by PGM Client directly to an NGS B-file. • A detailed handbook for PGM Client and the PGM strategy is in the final stages of revision and will be made public shortly, along with the software. • PGM Client is being used, or evaluated, for other campaigns in California and Arizona. UCSD / SIO / CSRC

  6. Online PGM Resources http://csrc.ucsd.edu/projects/pgm.html • PGM discussion forums : available • PGM Client handbook : in review • PGM presentations : coming soon • XML schemata : available • Campaign status page : available UCSD / SIO / CSRC

  8. Much Needed Future Developments • PGM Server – Fully-packaged repository* supporting real-time Client<->Server communications with multiple PGM Clients simultaneously, using web-based technologies. • PDA platforms – Verify further PDA platforms for PGM compatibility (currently only HP iPaq with Windows CE and Siemens mobile with Pocket PC). * Relational database schema, XML parsing libraries, web services and server-side scripts for coordinating the vetting of information submitted by managers and technicians, asynchronously, with high-reliability. Currently, PGM Client is NOT specific to the CSRC, but the repository services it depends on has only been implemented by the CSRC. Would like to make a generic, out-of-the-box repository component to PGM (aka PGM Server). UCSD / SIO / CSRC
