Teaching Objectives grasp the main idea and structure of the text; appreciate the narrative skills demonstrated in the text (switch between tenses, changed of narrators), some rhetorical devices(simile and metaphor) and the use of informal language in conversations; master the key language points and grammatical structures in the text; conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking and writing activities related.

Background Information William Shakespeare Born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, William Shakespeare (baptism 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. His surviving works consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

  7. Background Information Martina McBride Martina McBride is an American country music singer and songwriter. McBride has been called the “Céline Dion of Country Music” for her big-voiced ballads and soprano range. McBride has recorded a total of nine studio albums, one “greatest hits” compilation, one “live” album, a “Christmas” compilation, as well as two additional compilation albums. Seven of her studio albums and two of her compilations have received an RIAA certification of “Gold”, or higher. Worldwide, she has sold over 16 million albums. In addition, Martina has won the Country Music Association’s “Female Vocalist of the Year” award four times and the Academy of Country Music’s “Top Female Vocalist” award three times.

The slim-waisted girl over there is a rising film star. 2) small e.g. The chances of the Chinese Men’s Football Team winning the World Cup are slim. The single mother supported her two children with her slim income. go sb.’s way: go in sb.’s direction e.g. I’m going your way. May I give you a ride? go sb.’s way: go in sb.’s direction e.g. I’m going your way. May I give you a ride?

Some types of wood split easily. keen: adj. 1) (of interest, feelings, ect.) strong; deep e.g. From his childhood on, the famous writer has had a keen interest in observing people. Barbara watched her husband dancing with the slim girl with keen jealousy. 2) interested; eager (usu. followed by on / about, or infinitive to) e.g. Two thirds of the women students in my class are keen on soccer. He is out of hospital and keen to go back to work.
