  4. Teaching Objectives This lesson is intended for intensive study, where much attention is given to reading skills and writing skills. Lexical work and grammatical practice will never be left out in laying a solid foundation in English. Through studying this text the students will be able to:

Teaching Objectives 1. grasp the main idea of Text A (the impact of globalization on national identity and national loyalty); 2. appreciate the objectivity of the author of Text A in presenting different viewpoints; 3. master the key language points in Text A and learn how to use them in context; 4. understand the cultural background related to the content. 5. express themselves more freely on the theme of Globalization after doing a series of theme-related reading, listening, speaking and writing activities; 6. write an essay paying special attention to coherence.

Background Information Globalization Globalization (or globalisation) describes the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through communication, transportation, and trade. The term is most closely associated with the term economic globalization: the integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, the spread of technology, and military presence. However, globalization is usually recognized as being driven by a combination of economic, technological, sociocultural, political, and biological factors. The term can also refer to the transnational circulation of ideas, languages, or popular culture through acculturation. An aspect of the world which has gone through the process can be said to be globalized.

  7. Background Information Globalization Against this view, an alternative approach stresses how globalization has actually decreased inter-cultural contacts while increasing the possibility of international and intra-national conflict.

  8. Background Information Davos Davos is a municipality in the district of Davos in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It has a permanent population of 11,248 (2009). Davos is located on the Landwasser River, in the Swiss Alps, between the Plessur and Albula Range. At 1,560 meters (5,118 ft), it is the highest city in Europe. Davos is host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual meeting of global political and business elites (often referred to simply as Davos) and the home of one of Switzerland's biggest ski resorts. At the end of every year it serves as the site of the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, hosted by the HC Davos local hockey team.

  9. Background Information The current settlement of the Davos area started back in High Middle Ages with the immigration of Rhaeto-Romans. The village of Davos is first mentioned in 1213 as Tavaus. From about 1280 the barons of Vaz allowed German-speaking Walser colonists to settle down, and conceded them extensive self-administration rights, causing Davos to become the largest Walser settlement area in eastern Switzerland. Natives still speak a dialect that is atypical for Graubünden, showing similarities with German idioms of western parts of Switzerland, especially the Upper Valais.

Lead-in Activities The teacher divides the students into several groups, each assigned a specific field in which they’re to look for signs of globalization, such as language, food, lifestyle, popular culture, technology, politics, and business. Then each group makes a short presentation of no more than three minutes to the class on their findings.

The manager is expected to use his or her best endeavors to promote the artist’s career. cooperative/ joint ~ 共同努力 brave/ heroic ~ 勇敢的尝试 earnest/ honest ~认真的尝试 educational/ intellectual/ scientific ~ 教育/政治/科学上的尝试 do one’s homework: make preparations beforehand e.g. He must have done his homework before he gave the speech. You would do better if you have done your homework.

  15. Language Points crack: n. an attempt or try; a sharp snapping sound e.g. She hopes to have another crack at the world record this year. This is my first crack at cooking. a ~ of thunder 雷声 the sharp ~ of a rifle shot 刺耳的来福枪声 loud/ sharp ~ 刺耳的声音 give/ let out ~ 发出噼啪声 c.f. crack, crash & crush 三个词都可作动词,但词义不同。crack破裂, 砸开,发出爆裂声。The glass will crack if you pour boiled water into it. crash撞击,坠毁,发出巨响。 He crashed his car into a wall. crush压碎,击败。 A windmill is used to crush grain into flour.

Language Points chuckle: n.& v. to laugh quietly e.g. The father chuckled approval of what the son did. “I was only kidding,” he said with a low chuckle. little/ soft/deep ~ 小声/ 轻柔/ 低沉的笑声 with a ~ 笑着 give/ have/ let out ~ 发出笑声 ~ to yourself 不由自主的笑着 inadequate: a. not good enough, big enough, skilled enough etc. for a particular purpose e.g. The system is inadequate for the tasks it has to perform. The food supplies are inadequate to meet the needs of the hungry. find/ judge/ regard sth. as ~ 认为……是不充分的 completely/ entirely/ quite/ totally/ utterly~ 非常不充分

Text Analysis 1) The teacher asks the students to look at the theme of this unit and the title of Text A, and then the students will answer the question: what features should a Davos man have. 2) The teacher introduces the theme-related cultural information (Davos, Princeton, Stanford University, Hollywood, etc.) to the Ss to make them better understand text A. 3) The teacher asks the students to read the text again carefully. Then the students do Text Organization exercise part 1 on page 103.

  18. Oral Practice The teacher divides the class into small groups. In each group one student will act as a businessman from China. The others will act as his/her potential clients from other countries, such as Korea, England, America, Japan, etc. They are going to meet at an International Commodities Fair. Give the students 10 minutes to prepare for it. Some groups will volunteer to present their play.
