Teaching Objectives 1. grasp the main idea (we should adopt a sensible environmentalism) and structure of the the text (each part containing a contrast); 2. appreciate the various argumentative skills employed in the text; 3. master the key language points and grammatical structures in the text; 4. conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking and writing activites related to the theme of the unit.

Background Information • Environmental movement • The environmental movement, a term that includes the conservation and green politics, is a diverse scientific, social, and political movement for addressing environmental issues. Environmentalists advocate the sustainable management of resources and stewardship of the environment through changes in public policy and individual behavior. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in (not enemy of) ecosystems, the movement is centered on ecology, health, and human rights. The environmental movement is represented by a range of organizations, from the large to grassroots. Due to its large membership, varying and strong beliefs, and occasionally speculative nature, the environmental movement is not always united in its goals. At its broadest, the movement includes private citizens, professionals, religious devotees, politicians, and extremists.

  6. Background Information Silent Spring Silent Spring is a book written by Rachel Carson and published by Houghton Mifflin in September 1962. The book is widely credited with helping launch the environmental movement. The New Yorker started serializing Silent Spring in June 1962, and it was published in book form (with illustrations by Lois and Louis Darling) by Houghton Mifflin later that year. The book documented detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment, particularly on birds. Carson said that DDT had been found to cause thinner egg shells and result in reproductive problems and death. She also accused the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and public officials of accepting industry claims uncritically.

  8. Background Information DDT DDT (from its trivial name, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is one of the most well-known synthetic pesticides. It is a chemical with a long, unique, and controversial history.

  9. Lead-in Activities • The teacher asks the students to listen to the recording on Rachel Carson and her famous book Silent Spring and complete the statements after listening. • 2. The teacher asks the students to call out anything they can think of in association with environmental protection and note down what is said on the blackboard.

  15. Text Analysis 1. The teacher may discuss with students the major characteristics of a fable and then introduces some famous fables home and abroad. 2. The teacher guides the Ss through the directions for Text Organization exercise 1 on Ps. 219, and then have them do the exercise orally due to the time limit. 3. The teacher asks the students to read the second part again and give each paragraph a heading.

  16. Text Analysis 3. The whole class discuss the text paragraph by paragraph; point out the topic sentence or summarize the main idea of each paragraph; notice the choices of words and review some grammatical rules learnt.

  17. Oral Practice Debate Ten students are chosen out of the class to be the debater. Five of them form Group A, which holds that we should keep the environment intact, including the rivers, forests, underground resources and all animal habitats. The other five form Group B, which maintains that we should give priority to economic development and make full use of all the natural resources available. Each group should prepare a short speech, argue with the opposite side and answer the questions raised by the rest of the students, who will also evaluate the performances and vote for the final decision accordingly.
