Sodium ethoxide uses and how it is prepared

The organic compound with the formula C2H5ONA which is a white to yellowish powder that can dissolve in polar solvents like ethanol is called Sodium ethoxide. It’s most common use is that of a strong base. The other name for this organic compound is sodium ethylate which is a type of alkoxide salt that is non-toxic and that which can come in both powder form and solution form with ethanol.

  1. Sodium ethoxide The organic compound with the formula C2H5ONA which is a white to yellowish powder that can dissolve in polar solvents like ethanol is called Sodium ethoxide. It’s most common use is that of a strong base. The other name for this organic compound is sodium ethylate which is a type of alkoxide salt that is non-toxic and that which can come in both powder form and solution form with ethanol. It is worth knowing about the distribution of ions in Sodium Ethoxide where the left part of the below image is the ball and sticks replica of an ethoxide anion whereas the one on the right is that of sodium cation.

  2. How is this compound prepared? Synthesis of the above compound can be done by chemically reacting sodium metal (i.e., sodium hydroxide) with ethyl alcohol which helps create sodium ethoxide in liquid form and hence the equation: 2 C2H5OH + 2 Na → 2 C2H5ONa + H2. Another way is a reaction between sodium hydroxide and anhydrous ethanol can result in giving the chemical sodium ethoxide combined with water. However, by using a drying agent one can easily remove water which will then leave us with Sodium ethoxide having immense purity as in the below equation: C2H5OH + NaOH ⇌ C2H5ONa + H2O The solid or powdered form of sodium ethoxide has a yellow color.

  3. Other features of this chemical When sodium is compounded with ethanol, the chemical reaction leaves bubbles in the form of hydrogen gas and leaves a sodium ethoxide solution which is a form of an alkoxide. The sodium ethoxide in ethanol solution is colorless. Ethanol or ethyl alcohol is a result of the reaction between Sodium ethoxide and water. The boiling point is 91-degree Celsius for Sodium ethoxide. Applications of this organic chemical: Sodium ethoxide is of those components used in synthesizing diethyl ester of malonic acid along with ethyl ester. Sodium ethoxide is also employed in Claisen condensation.

  4. About 2-Amino-pyridine It is known to be an organic compound with the formula of H2NC5H4N. It is one of the three isomeric aminopyridines. It is an uncolored solid which is used in the mass production of the drugs piroxicam, tenoxicam, sulfa pyridine, and tripelennamine. It is put together with the reaction of sodium amide and pyridine. Although 2-hydroxy pyridine happens in significant amounts as the pyridine tautomer, the related imine tautomer (HNC5H4NH) is less critical for 2-Amino-pyridine.

  5. A case study of multi-component reactions between 2-Amino pyridine and other substances A good and convenient protocol for multi-component rejoinders between 2-aminopyrimidine, aldehydes and isonitriles is illustrated. Toluene was chosen as the reaction solvent built on mechanistic reasoning. The product mixtures were known to contain a single pyrimidine product in each case, which was taken away and purified with the help of precipitation and crystallization. Chromatographic recovery from filtrates raises the total yields to 49–66%. The procedure also provides a practical alternative to previously reported methods wherein the coming into existence of multiple products was observed. For more: Sodium ethoxide
