  2. What’s the Problem? • Compared to the rest of the country, deprived areas have: – three times as much burglary – 30% higher mortality rates – child poverty three times higher – 70% of all English BME residents

  3. What are the key features? Two long term goals: • lower worklessness and crime, better health, skills, housing and physical environment • narrow the gap between the most deprived areas and the rest

  4. What will change? Three Key Dimensions: • new policies, funding and targets • better local co-ordination and community empowerment • national and regional support
