Area and Perimeter of Rectangles

The area of a rectangle is the measure of the space enclosed by its four sides. It is calculated by multiplying the length and width of the rectangle. The perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of all its four sides, which can be found by adding twice the length to twice the width. These measurements are fundamental in geometry and help quantify the size and shape of rectangular objects.

  1. Area and Perimeter of Rectangles MEASUREMENT www.sudo24.com

  2. Quick recall! Look around you and spot objects that look like a rectangle. Do you know how to find their area and perimeter? www.sudo24.com

  3. Lesson Outline • Area of a rectangle on a Grid • Area vs. Perimeter • Solving for the Area and Perimeter www.sudo24.com

  4. Learning Outcomes • Determine the area of a rectangular figure on a grid • Differentiate area and perimeter • Solve word problems involving area and perimeter of a rectangle www.sudo24.com

  5. Rectangle LENGTH • Has 4 sides. • Has 4 right angles. • Parallel sides have equal measures. • The sides of a rectangle are known as length and width. WIDTH www.sudo24.com

  6. Area on a Grid A grid has vertical and horizontal lines that form a square. Each square measures 1 sq. unit. Let's count how many squares the blue rectangle covers. www.sudo24.com

  7. Area on a Grid 35 SQUARE UNITS There are 35 squares. This means that the rectangle has an area of 35 square units. www.sudo24.com

  8. Area vs. Perimeter AREA PERIMETER Area Perimeter The amount of space inside a shape. The total distance around the outside of a shape. www.sudo24.com

  9. LENGTH LENGTH WIDTH WIDTH Area vs. Perimeter AREA = length x width PERIMETER = 2 (LENGTH + WIDTH) Area Perimeter The area is the product of length and width. Area is expressed in square units. The perimeter is twice the sum of the length and width. Perimeter is expressed in units. www.sudo24.com

  10. Example Let's find the area and perimeter of this basketball court. Area 15M Area = length × width Area = 15 m × 11 m Area = 165 sq. cm 11M Perimeter Perimeter = 2 (length + width) Perimeter = 2 (15 m + 11 m) Perimeter = 2 (26 m) Perimeter = 52 m www.sudo24.com

  11. Mid-Discussion Break What tasks require measuring the perimeter of a rectangle? In what real-life situations do you need to measure the area of a rectangle? www.sudo24.com

  12. Applying Area and Perimeter Work in pairs in solving the following word problems. Write your workings and answer here Write your workings and answer here 1 2 The rectangular field shown is 310 ft. long and 250 ft. wide. What is its area? The window has a length of 160 cm and a width of 80 cm. What is its perimeter? www.sudo24.com

  13. ANSWER KEY Applying Area and Perimeter A = 310 ft × 250 ft A = 77,500 sq. ft The rectangular field has an area of 77,500 sq. ft P = 2(160 cm + 80 cm) P = 2(240 cm) P = 480 cm The window has a perimeter of 480 cm. 1 2 The rectangular field shown is 310 ft. long and 250 ft. wide. What is its area? The window has a length of 160 cm and a width of 80 cm. What is its perimeter? www.sudo24.com

  14. LENGTH WIDTH Area of Rectangle A = L × W Recap Remember the following formulas in finding the area and perimeter of a rectangle. Perimeter of Rectangle P = 2 (L+W) www.sudo24.com
