  4. Area and Perimeter A continual source of confusion AREA Perimeter • Area is the two-dimension space inside a region. Data from NAEP suggest that students have an incomplete understanding. • Perimeter is the distance around a region. Although perimeter is a 3rd grade standard, only 71% of 8th graders accurately identified the perimeter on the NAEP assessment. Students are taught formulas without understanding.

  5. Rectangle Activity • Fold and cut rectangle on the diagonal, making two identical triangles. Arrange the triangles into different shapes. Only sides of the same length can be matched up and must match exactly. Find all six shapes. • Does one shape have a greater area? How do you know?

  6. Conservation of Area • This is not an obvious concept for K-2 students. • Although each figure is a different shape, all the figures have the same area.

  7. Fixed Perimeter Do Figures with the same perimeter have the same area? • What different sized rectangles can be made with a perimeter of 24 units? • Create as many different rectangles with a perimeter of 24. • Build and label each rectangle with its perimeter and its area. • What discoveries did you make?

  8. Fixed Area Do figures with the same area have the same perimeter? How many rectangles can be made with an area of 36 sq. units? What do all the figures with smaller perimeter have in common ? What do all the figures with large perimeter have in common?
