  1. Perimeter and Area Objective: Learn to find the perimeter and area

  2. Theperimeterof a polygon is the distance around the outside of the polygon. • The perimeter of this yard is the distance around the outside of the yard, indicated by the red arrow; It is measured in linear units such as feet or meters. To find the perimeter add the length of each side. Perimeter: 8cm + 8cm + 3cm + 3cm = 22 cm • The formula for perimeter of a rectangle is: P= 2×L + 2×W Example: A rectangle has a length of 12 centimeters and a width of 4 centimeters. Find the perimeter.

  3. To find the perimeter of a regular polygon, multiply the number of sides by the length of one side. • Find the perimeter of a regular pentagon with each side measuring 3 inches. Solution: A pentagon has 5 sides. So you have to multiply 5 × 3 in = 15 in Example: Find the perimeter of a regular hexagon with each side measuring 8 meters.

  4. To find the area of a rectangle or a square… • You must multiply the length by the width. • The formula is: A = L × W; where A is the area, L is the length, and W is the width. • Example: A rectangle has a length of 8 centimeters and a width of 3 centimeters. Find the area. Solution: Area = 8 cm × 3 cm = 24 cm2
