  1. Welcome to Pre-AP Biology! Reminder: please make sure your cell phones and any computers are in your bag and turned off.

  2. Learning Styles Inventory • Group yourselves by learning style. • In your group, come up with a brief description of your learning style and three concrete things you can do to be successful this year. • Select a speaker to report to the rest of the class on what your group decides.

  3. What is Biology? • The study of living things and their processes. • You will learn: • Science process skills • Laboratory techniques • Cell structure and function • Genetics and heredity • Evolution and classification • Diversity of living organisms • Ecology

  4. Goals for This Year • To learn scientific skills to investigate and study the world around you • To understand how biology impacts your life every day • To encourage the spirit of scientific thought

  5. The Basics… • Grading • 40% Homework/ Classwork • 25% Exams • 20% Labs/Projects • 15% Six Weeks Exam • Late work policy • Supplies • Composition Notebook (not spiral) • Pens and pencils • 3 ring binder • Lined notebook paper • Textbook

  6. Cheating and Plagiarism • Very serious offense! • Grade = 0 for all parties involved • Conference with parent and academic dean Class Policies • Makeup work • YOUR responsibility! • One day to make up work for each day you are absent. • Exams must be taken in one sitting

  7. Classroom Expectations • Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. • Materials should be brought to class each day. • Room must be clean before leaving—I’m notcha Mama! • Treat everyone with respect. • Follow school and class rules. • Phones and computers: I will let you know when they are allowed.

  8. Guidelines for Success (AKA words of wisdom from former students) • Come to tutoring! • Read the textbook. • Don’t cram the night before a test. • Ask questions. • This will most likely be your most difficult class. • Have a positive attitude!

  24. Safety Assignment You and a partner will be assigned a safety symbol. You will create a cartoon about what happens when students do not follow that safety symbol. Put both of your names on the back of the cartoon.
