  1. Welcome to Pre-ap world history On this date in history…in 3114 BCE, legend has it the Mayan long count calendar began. In 1522, explorer Ferdinand Magellan returned after being the 1st fleet to circumnavigate the earth. Unfortunately, Magellan died during the journey, but his body was preserved in a barrel of rum.

  2. Please fill out the informationsheet… • Your name, including any nickname you prefer • Your parent/guardian name • Best trait as a student • One trait you hope to improve this year • Activities/interests outside of school • Any other info I need to know (i.e., you need to sit up front, you can’t hear well, etc.)

  3. Why take ap • The most rigorous curriculum you can take • Possible college credit when you take the AP test • Weighted average • The challenge • Learn more about history, writing and language

  4. How to succeed • Responsibility: Responsibility is the key to success, and the remedy for failure. You are the sole determinate of your success in this class. No excuses…ever! • Respect: Respect the person and property of those around you. Respect yourself and your intelligence. • Right: Right action, right effort, right speech, and right thought. Everyday.

  5. Grading policy The department grading policy for this class is: • Test/projects = 40% • Quizzes/classwork = 25% • Participation = 15% • Homework = 20% • There is no extra-credit

  6. Homework • Homework sheets will be given out on the first day of the school week. All homework for the week will be listed. This will also be available on my EBoard. • All written homework is due on the following Monday of the next week. • Homework is to be typed, or written neatly in blue or black ink. Other colors or work done in pencil is not acceptable. • Homework is due at the start of the period on Monday. Late homework will be assessed a 20% per day penalty. After one week, the homework is worth no credit. • Additional readings or study questions may be assigned at any time. These are not always on the homework sheet. These will count toward your participation grade

Pre-ap world history • Textbook: The Earth and It’s Peoples • Three ring binder • Pens (I will provide pencils on test days; please do not take notes or complete any classwork in pencil) • Optional: a set of colored pencils or pens for maps and timelines; three different colored highlighters may be useful, as well

  8. Tests & Quizzes • Expect at least one test and two essays per quarter • Tests are based on AP-style questions • There will be a quiz or assessment every Friday • Absences during the week do not excuse you from an assessment • There is a midterm and a final exam • You are expected to take the AP World test in May 2013, then the Regents exam in June 2013

  11. notes • All of my smartboard lessons are/will be on my Eboard • Print them out ahead of time or take notes in class • You cannot sit in class and say you will print out the notes later…that’s not the way it works • Extra help is every morning before school

  12. Class Issues • Do now – on board, worksheets on front row desks. Take one, sit down, get to work • Passes – have your agenda book out or get a pass from the pass box. Have it ready for me to sign. • Latenesses – will impact your grade. 3 lates = 1 referral. 3 referrals = ineligibility

  13. School Issues • Lockers – if you can’t find yours, I have a map…just ask • Bathrooms – at the bottom of the double staircase • Library – down the hall and to the left on left-hand side. To get a pass for lunch or study hall, go before school or during HR and get a pass from the librarian • Guidance – if you have a problem with your schedule, you need to make an appointment before or after school. Your HR teacher will get a pass with your appointment time in their mailbox.
