  3. What is a map? • A flat models of a three-dimensional object • Who makes maps? • Cartographers • Cartography: the science of mapmaking.

Latitude • Latitude • The distance measured in degrees north (N) or south (S) latitude from 0⁰-90⁰. • Run east and west. • Parallel to the equator. • Equator • Horizontally circles Earth halfway between the north and south poles. • Separates Earth into two equal halves. • Northern & Southern hemisphere • 0⁰ latitude

  6. Question: • If the circumference of Earth is roughly 40,000km, how many kilometers are in 1⁰ of latitude?

  7. Answer: • Earth is a sphere with 360⁰ • Circumference = 40,000km • 40,000km/360⁰ = 111.1km

  8. Degrees of Latitude • Can be broken down into minutes and seconds • 1⁰=60’(minutes) • 1’=60” (seconds)

  10. Longitude • Longitude • Used to measure distances east (E) and west (W). • Also known as meridians. • Measured from the Prime Meridian (0⁰) • Not parallel; run vertically from pole to pole. • Roughly 15⁰ wide at the equator

  11. Longitude • Prime Meridian • Goes through Greenwich, England. • Points west of the prime meridian are numbered from 0⁰-180⁰W • Points east of the prime meridian are numbered from 0⁰-180⁰E

  12. Question: • Does the Prime Meridian go 360⁰ around Earth?

  13. Answer: • No. • The International Date Line is opposite the Prime Meridian • Prime Meridian = 0⁰ longitude • International Date Line = 180⁰ longitude • Where east lines of longitude meet west lines of longitude

  15. Time Zones • Earth has 24 time zones • 24hours per day • 1 hour per time zone • Roughly 15⁰ per zone at the equator • If you travel west across the IDL, are you advancing one day or going back one day?
