  2. IMPORTANT • A chance to learn first • No commitment to ‘taking control’ at the end of the project • A real chance to think about how life can or could be if you and your family have more control over how money is spent on your support and the services you receive

  3. What is the Dynamite project all about? Using this new way of working to move control much closer to the person and those closest to them Introducing ‘self-directed support’

  4. Big change means starting small Dynamite is about supporting a small number of young people and their families to have a go at working this way

  5. 18 months work aimed at supporting 8 young people with support from their families (and those closest to them) in making an informed choice about taking control of the funds presently supporting them

  6. How things work at present… How self-directed support work…

  7. Complete a simple assessment • The assessment result equates to an allocation of resource • This is your allocation

  8. Write a Support Plan – with support and information • The Support Plan is based on the young person and informed by those closest • There’s a ‘supported decision making’ part to the plan • Your facilitator can help you

  9. When the plan is complete it needs to be ‘signed off’ so that the money can be made available for making the plan real

  10. There are lots of ways money can be managed on behalf of the young person – it could go to a separate bank account, it could be managed by an organisation, it could stay in the local authority but you would still have control over how it was used

  11. Now you can start finding the people who are going to support you • The person you have asked to be your facilitator can help you

  12. You can recruit the people you want to support you – you can help with interviewing • If you chose a service to do this you can still have a part in identifying the people who you want to support you

  13. You will have someone to call in case of emergency and you will have reviews, maybe a bit more often at the beginning

Step 1 – May 2006 – August 2006 Making a start Each young person and their family have an Individual Budget of £200.00 Each young person has someone who will support them and those closest in making a support plan using the £200 – they can choose how and when they want to access their 10 hours of support Using this money gives the young person a chance to have a go at something different, something that they really want to try

Your role as a Facilitator • To become familiar with the Top Tips booklet • To support the young person and their family to use In The Driving Seat as a basis of their support plan for spending their £200 • To support the young person and their family so that the support plan can be signed off by the end of June and that they can use their money by the end of August

  17. Next Steps • Come along to the session with families next week, if you can, so that you and the families can decide together if you are a good match. If you can’t come, please speak to us about how we can help you to meet up • Spend time with them to start the support plan • Come along to the drop in session at the beginning of June to ask questions, share ideas • Phone us if you need to or just want a chat
