  2. What’s a CD? • Stands for Compact Disc • An object that stores digital data • Later versions include CD-ROMs, DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-Ray

  3. CDs • James T. Russell invented the CD in 1965 • Mass production of CDs and players were started in 1982 by Sony and Philips • Only had Audio

  4. CD-ROMs • First made in 1984 • Can place various types of data • Can hold hold about 700 MB

  5. DVDs • Stands for Digital Versatile Disk • DVDs came out in 1996 in Japan • Replaced VHS in 2003

  6. HD DVD • Launched in 2006 by Toshiba • Became obsolete after a rivalry with Blu-Ray

  7. Blu-Ray • Launched by Sony in 2006 • Replaced HD DVD after 2 year rivalry

  9. How a CD works • Files are stored from the center of the disk to the outside of the disk • Lasers in the reader read the pits in the CD that are 125 nanometers deep • Laser is 780 nanometers wide

  12. How DVDs work • Works a lot like a CD, but holds more data • Different types of DVDs hold different amounts of data • Laser is 650 nanometers wide

  13. How HD DVD work • Works like CDs and DVDs, but holds more memory and uses a smaller and different laser then DVD players • Can hold up to 30 GB of data

  14. How Blu-Ray Works • Works like all the others, but holds more data • Blu-Ray players use a blue laser that is 405 nanometers thick
