  1. Blog: Spikeadillo.com Understanding Environment Concept Art from the Artists Perspective The knight in shining armor astride his horse saves the princess from the castle, slaying the dragon; the Braveheart zombie terminator in the post-apocalyptic world; the warrior princess charging with her army across the enemy lines; cars racing against speed and time on the tracks; more than often we have been enchanted and enthralled by these fantastical depictions on screen, be it in a video game or a movie-VFX. While the characters capture our attention with their appearance and distinct personality, what brings those more to life is the ambiance created around their surroundings, the imaginary and mystical environment. It’s theenvironment concept art that makes the magic happen. Every time that you get mesmerized by the graphical representation of a fantasy world know that it’s the creative genius of a concept artist who has given such a magical form to a mere idea of an imaginary. However, the environment artist portfolio need not be just a collection of mythical land with magical creatures, as they are also known to create actual places and real ambiance on their digital canvas. Here in this blog, we will explore the ideas of usual and fantasy environment concept artfrom the perspective of artists. The Essential Concepts of Environment Concept Art Concept artists consider designing an environment to be the most challenging form of concept art that there is. It’s not just about the vision and creative approach that goes into developing the ambiance, there is a significant level of technical knowledge, that’sessential as well. It’s more than just creating a few characters and props, as environment art happens on a much larger scale, where each detail carries relevance. In most cases, the ambiance reflects the personality of the characters, so there should be parity as well. For instance, if one has to etch the surroundings of a princess who is locked in a high castle, there should be some semblance in the fantasy environment concept art that reflects the state of mind of the captive, cannot be all cheery and bright. Before embarking on the project, the artist is presented with stringent guidelines by the clients of what they want and what they do not want, but as against character concept art, the scope in environment art is vast and limitless. Outdoor environments keep transitioning according to the season or the mood and let’s not forget about indoor environments like the interiors of the castle, the city layout, stadiums, and likewise. Environment concept art is uniquely detail-oriented where a simple miss of stroke can make the whole ambiance fall apart. Given the criteria of the work, the concept artist needs to have experience in geology, architectural design, landscaping, along with an idea about depth perception. Bottom Line
