  2. A Bit about Johnsonville Sausage • Family owned business: Sheboygan Falls, WI • Provides GREAT sausage products around the Globe • Member Focused: “Use the Business to Build the People” • Started Sustainability officially in 2007 • It’s a Journey not a Race

  3. Answering a few Key Questions First! • The 3R’s is a piece of Sustainability…. JVL focuses on the 3P’s… • People • Planet • Profit (must impact all three (3) to be sustainable)

  4. Finding Sustainability from Within • Ask internal experts about the 3 R’s and the 3P’s • Been doing Sustainability for years • Often efficiency translates into Sustainability • E.g. Transportation • Fleet Management System • Auxiliary Power Units (APU’s) • Aerodynamics • Speed Governors • Automatic Tire Inflation • Tracking Lbs per Mile • All Translates into Sustainability

Gathering Sustainability information and Establishing Metrics • The places we started • Utilities • Water, Natural Gas, Electricity • Work the numbers into a common understandable metric e.g. “X” gal of water per pound of finished goods • Recycling • Metal, Pallets, Plastic & Glass, Cardboard, Solid waste • Computers, Batteries and used oil

  6. Other Places to Start • Look around it is everywhere. • Boilers • Re-circulation • More efficient ones • Lighting Projects • Many are subsidized • Production Efficiency • Dumpster Dive • Many recyclables

  7. Many Companies are Looking for Green in Green • Companies will evaluate your site for opportunity and share in the profit or savings. • Dumpster Dive • Trays, film, plastics, corrugate • Negotiate fees • Develop projects

  10. Reach out…. • There are consultants that will help…. • They do it all the time so they know where to look • They share in the savings • The work the 3R’s and the Contract side of Sustainability.

  11. Sustainability Project Review • Create a Sustainability Screen for projects • Implement a “Yes” / “No” checklist for all changes to determine 3P or 3R impact. • Is the job Safer because of the change? People • Does the change increase water use? Planet • Does the change save/make money? Profit • Captured the Database for Members to see and track the Impact
