  1. Competitive Workforce Grants Investing resources in our communities for regional success. Public Information Session February 15, 2012

Description • The purpose of the Competitive Workforce Grant Program is to improve the economy of west central Minnesota. • proposals solicited once annually for the next 5 years • an estimated $100,000 will be awarded • number and amount of awards each year will vary • grantees required to attend a LFDC meeting

  3. Hypothesis IF WCI provides one year of start up funding, and stakeholders use it to launch new promising workforce development strategies that address skill shortages in west central Minnesota. THEN Workers will obtain jobs and advance in careers that pay family-sustaining incomes. AND Employers will experience success in hiring and advancing workers in careers.

  4. Eligible proposals must: Be submitted by a 501 (c) (3) or unit of government Focus on west central Minnesota Focus on industries with job openings paired with a shortage of qualified workers Provide a 1:1 match

  5. Low priority will be placed on: Programs focused on jobs that do not pay a family-sustaining wage Programs lacking a solid plan for continuation - this includes one time training program General programs lacking a focus on good paying jobs in the region for which there are openings

  6. WCI will not support: Capital campaigns Fund drives, grant writing, or fundraising programs Lobbying or political activities Operating costs for existing programs Scholarships for existing programs Efforts to recruit workers at the expense of other local businesses

  7. Project Examples Start-up costs associated with offering CNA training to students at a school on an ongoing basis. Deliver new programming that encourages youth to consider health care careers in west central Minnesota. With employers offer on-site delivery of services that foster job retention and career advancement. These might include career coaching, financial literacy training and case management. Projects that engage new partners, or new technologies that make education and training programs and services more accessible to low-skilled and underutilized workers.

  9. Selection Process Proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee appointed by the LFDC WCI staff may conduct site visits with finalists Final determination of awards to be made by the WCI Board
