  1. The Mustang Spirit Be Responsible

  2. BE RESPONSIBLE • What does it mean to be responsible? • What are things that you can to do as teenagers to be responsible? • The Universal Expectations for MHS under BE RESPONSIBLE: • Use your locker – Why/How does this show responsibility? • Dispose of litter and recycle – • Follow school expectations and rule - Why/How does this show responsibility? • Travel with a pass - Why/How does this show responsibility? • Use agenda book/planner - Why/How does this show responsibility? • Help others

  3. HELP OTHERS • Think of a time when you needed help and for whatever reason you did not get it… • have you ever been injured and needed help and no one helped you? • Have you ever witnessed someone in need and helped them? How did that feel to know that you helped someone who needed it. • What could the outcome be if you choose not to help others?

  4. The Lululemon Murder and the Pain of Bystanders’ Inaction • “The brutal murder of Jayna Murray inside a LululemonAthletica store in downtown Bethesda will be remembered for many things: The 331 wounds inflicted. The bizarre lies her co-worker first told police. The single hour it took a jury to reach a guilty verdict against that co-worker. • But perhaps as much as anything else, the murder will be remembered for the reaction — or apparent non-reaction — of two Apple Store employees next door, who heard cries for help and did nothing.” References Johnson, J. (2011, November 04). The Lululemon Murder and the Pain of Bystanders’ Inaction. Washington Post. 5. Lululemon Murder • What SHOULD/COULD the employees have done? • Why do you think they did NOT do something?? • If you were in the store and heard someone crying for help what would/could you do? • Many people fear getting involved – WHY?

  6. What is the point?? • We want our school to be a safe learning environment for ALL and your actions/inactions play a major part • 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school • 71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school. • 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month • Bystanders need to realize that bullying is a serious problem, and that a lack of action on their part will only give bullies more opportunities to torment their victims. • Close to 50% of all bullying events stop when a bystander decides to intervene (Dr. Ken Rigby)

  7. Be Responsible – HELP OTHERS • Don’t assume that this is a private matter between the bully and the victim. Incidents of bullying, especially those that are frequent, are often not because of personal reasons; • Don’t combat violence with violence. It takes a lot of courage for someone to step up on behalf of a bullied person. However, don’t use insults or physical violence to defend the victim. Now is not the time to show off. You will most likely only make it harder for the victim • Do not get discouraged if you have already talked to the teachers and nothing happened. Keep trying. Teachers and other school authorities will respond if they find out that the bullying is becoming a recurrent problem. Try talking to other teachers and counselors so that you can get more people involved in trying to stop the situation; • If you feel that this is none of your business, put yourself in the victim’s shoes. Bullying can cause severe anxiety, depression, anger, and frustration in a person, and can turn their life into a nightmare. You wouldn’t want to feel that way.

  8. Sign The Pledge • By signing the shoeprint – you are pledging to BE RESPONSIBLE and DO SOMETHING when you see bad things happening
