  1. The Wild Mustang Written by Timmy Vogelman

  2. Thunder roared as a mustang galloped across the mesa. Desperately he looked around. Know one was in sight. Blaze was just a few months old. His body was as dark as the night sky. A white star was on his forehead. When he ran, it looked as if he would lift right off the ground. Before the storm had started, Blaze had been with his family. Until the ranchers came. They scattered the herd, and Blaze became lost. All the trails were so confusing, but his dad would have known where to go.[He was the lead mustang]. Blaze sniffed the air, looking for his herds scent. His instincts were interrupted by a low howling. He would have to find someplace safe for the night.

  3. As Blaze continued through the stormy night, he sensed that something was following him. Between claps of thunder, he thought he heard quick panting. “Grrrrrrr…..” Blaze whirled around. Right behind him, to his horror, were three hungry wolves!

  4. After awhile, the storm, died away. Stars came out, and a crescent moon appeared. When Blaze looked over his shoulder, the wolves were nowhere to be seen.

  5. In the morning, Blaze woke to the sound of birds chirping. He got up, stretched his legs, and walked out into the sunshine. After a drink form a nearby stream, he began exploring. If Blaze wanted to survive long enough to find his herd, he would have to learn how to protect himself. After a walk through a field of wild flowers he returned to the stream and started grazing. Deep in the bushes, a pair of eyes watched him.

  6. Many months past. Blaze’s black coat turned to a dull gray. At about two years old, he was a white mustang. By now he knew his territory, where to get food and water, and how to defend off predators.

  7. One morning, Blaze was caught by ranchers! Fighting and kicking, he tried to get away. The mustang was no match for the ranchers. They brought him to a strange fort made out of wood. Soldiers stood around the walls and were herding more horses into straight lines. One of these horses, a chestnut mare, stopped and glanced at Blaze. With one quick jerk, Blaze yanked a rancher right off his feet, and charged through the horses. Ranchers tried to stop him, but with a few kicks, he got to the door, and Blaze with the mare, Miya, raced out into the mesa.

  8. Now that they had escaped, Blaze picked up some tracks… horse tracks! Quickly he shot across the desert, Miya right behind him. As they reached the hilltop, he spotted his herd!!! The two of them raced down toward them. Blazes family neighed when they joined them. At last, Blaze had returned to his family, as the new leader of the herd! Blaze had become a wild mustang!
