  3. The Fulbright Scholarship Program • HISTORY • Established in 1946 by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government. • Largest education scholarship program in the world – exists between the USA and 155 countries. • Over 250,000 Fulbright Scholars worldwide to date. The Australian–American Fulbright Commission • FULBRIGHT COMMISSION • Established in 1949 – bi-national treaty between Australia and the U.S. • Funded by Australian & U.S. governments and corporate sponsors • Australian Prime Minister and U.S. Ambassador are the Honorary Co-Chairs • Board of 10 members appointed by the Australian Minister for Education and U.S. Ambassador • Over 2,600 Australian and 2000 American Fulbright Scholars The Fulbright Agreement was signed in Canberra in November 1949 by U.S. Ambassador to Australia, Hon. Fulbright Australian Scholarships • CORE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM • Approx 20 Scholarships on offer each year: • 12 - 14 Postgraduate Scholarships (A$45,000) for 8-12 months study or research • 1 - 2 Postdoctoral Scholarship (A$45,000) for 3-12 months research • Up to 4 Professional Scholarships (A$30,000) for 3-4 months research and/or short course • Up to 3 Senior Scholarships (A$35,000) for 3-6 months research/guest lecturing • State and NT Scholarships – QLD, VIC, TAS, WA, NSW, SA and NT Kirsty Guster 2000 Postgraduate Scholar to the Manhattan School of Music www.fulbright.com.au

Fulbright Selection Process • SELECTION PROCESS • All applications due 31 August • Short list and interview at state level (September) for Postgraduates and Postdoctoral • Senior Scholar and Professionals considered at National level without interviews • Recommendation to National Selection Committee • National Selection (December) • Begin Scholarship between 1 July following year and 30 June the year after.
