  1. Seeded Growth of Noble-Metal NanocrystalsYounan Xia, Georgia Tech Research Corporation, DMR 1215034 Seed-mediated growth is a powerful route to the synthesis of bimetallic nanocrystals. However, it is very difficult to precisely control the sites at which heterogeneous nucleation and growth will occur, especially for nanocrystal seeds enclosed by a set of equivalent faces. By adjusting the rate at which AgNO3 is added into a solution containing 18-nm Pd nanocubes, we could precisely control whether the newly formed Ag atoms stick to and grow on one, three adjacent, or all six faces of a Pd cube (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 2354-2359). The products include Pd-Ag hybrid dimers, Pd-Ag eccentric nanocubes with Pd located at one of the corners, and Pd@Ag core-shell nanocrystals. All these bimetallic nanocrystals are of importance for their potential use in surface plasmon resonance and as tandem catalysts. Most recently, we were able to successfully extend the same strategy to other systems, including Pd-Au, Pd-Pd and Ag-Ag, to greatly expand the diversity of nanocrystals with different compositions, structures and properties.
