  2. CAUSES • Depression: • Most of the world prior to WWII was not doing well financially • Fascist Leaders • Power hungry leaders who get what they want through force

  3. Treaty of Versailles • Germans were unhappy with the treaty’s terms • Hitler announces in 1935 that he will pledge to undo the Treaty of Versailles; propaganda begins under the campaign “Today Germany, Tomorrow the WORLD” • Hitler wants to re-occupy the lands taken away from Germany through the treaty • Which he knows he will be able to because the League of Nations is WEAK

  4. APPEASING THE GERMANS • Appeasement: a policy practiced by the allied powers with concern to Germany; allowing Germany to occupy land in Europe to avoid going to war. • During the 1930’s Hitler played on the hopes & fears of the Western democracies. Each time he grabbed new territory, he would declare an end to his demands. Peace was temporary until he decided to move again. • Hitler captured Rhineland, Austria, & Czechoslovakia

War In Europe Starts • September 1, 1939: Hitler invades Poland • 2 days later France and G.B. declare war on Germany • Blitzkrieg: Lightning war – planes and tanks followed by massive infantry force • Soviets occupy half of Poland and Baltic countries per secret agreement with Germany • June 1940 – France Surrenders to Germany • Axis powers now control – France, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Greece, Norway, Finland, and Poland.

  8. Battle of Britain • Summer 1940 – Germany focuses on bombing British cities to break morale • Invention of radar, stolen Enigma (German code breaking machine) and British resistance help to save G.B. from German occupation • Last almost 1 year • Life normal when sun is up but when sun is down life in a subway or bomb shelter

  9. Forget the Nonaggression Pact… Hitler is Nutty! • Operation Barbarossa: Hitler’s plan to invade to Soviet Union to create more “living space” for the Aryan race • June 1941 • Germans unprepared for fighting • Summer uniforms in winter • Didn’t bring enough food • Gain nothing but lose 500,000 lives
