  1. Device Characterization within Virtual Lab using LabVIEW Supervisor : Prof. Joseph John Department of Electrical Engineering Vaibhav Singh (Y4466) Vikas Kumar Sharma (Y4482)

  2. Objectives • To perform the device characterization experiments using a computer interface. • To carry out characterization experiments from any remote computer on the network.

  3. Device Characterization • Studying the characteristics of a device • Used in prediction of device behaviour in various circuit conditions • Helpful in circuit designing

  4. Virtual Lab • Conducting the experiment in Lab • Circuit • Power supply • Function Generator/ Potentiometer • Multimeter , CRO etc. • Using computer interface • Circuit • Power supply • DAQ card • LabVIEW • Remote access from another computer

  5. Advantages of Virtual Lab • Can play with circuit parameters • Get real-time plots on the computer • Experiments can be done from anywhere • Educating large number of students • Cost savings

  6. Devices used • BJT • One of the most basic and extensively used semiconductor device • JFET • Similar to MOSFET in characteristics.

  7. Experimental Setup • Computer • Device circuit • NI PCI DAQ card 6221 • NI BNC 2120 connector • LM 324, LM 741 as Voltage follower • CD 4051 Analog Mux/Demux, HJR1-2C relay • Power Supply

  8. Circuit Diagrams BJT circuit JFET circuit

  9. Combined Circuit Diagram

  10. Equations

  13. Results - BJT

  14. Results – JFET

  15. Remote Communication Device selection,Circuit Parameters (Resistance values) A computer in Remote location Host Computer in Lab Results and Graphs

  16. Remote Communication • DSTP (Data Socket Transfer Protocol) • Web Publishing Tool

  17. Advantages of Web Publishing Tool over DSTP • DSTP requires IP address of the user who wants to communicate. • DSTP use UDP while Web Publishing Tool uses TCP/IP. • Web Publishing Tool does not require full installation of LabVIEW and it can be accessed through web browsers as it uses http.

  18. Future Work • Other devices like MOSFET, medium power transistor can be used in project with small modifications. • Other experiments can be implemented in the same manner.
