  1. Sound Decisions: Setting and Mood

  2. Setting… The setting of a story tells you where and when the story takes place.

  3. Setting But you must do more than just simply state the time and the place. “It was a long time ago in Weyr” “It was during the exciting time of Impression, a long time ago, in the magical land of Weyr.”

  4. Now you try…

  5. A movie’s soundtrack does more than just fill the time between conversations. It establishes a mood and, with repeated hearings, may even remind moviegoers of a movie’s theme. Can you think of some examples of this?

  6. Mood Think of how the movie soundtrack establishes the mood of a certain scene. Listen to the following clip and think about what kind of scene you would expect from the following music.

  7. A story's mood is the overall feel of a story. It is an important element of story creation.

  8. If you stop to think about it, it's impossible to write without including a mood in your writing. Just as you cannot speak without speaking in some, so you cannot write without creating a certain mood. Even writing this is purposefully flat has a mood - - - the mood of being "purposefully flat." http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/mood.in.writing.html

  9. Some tricks to help you set the mood in your writing. Use Your Senses When writing an angry, tense scene between two characters, I helped generate the feelings in myself by cranking some Metallica music while I wrote. It helped set the pace and instantly helped evoke the tension that the scene needed. It's also a scene that required little editing afterwards (thanks, guys!).

  10. Some tricks to help you set the mood in your writing. Music is a great mood-altering tool. If you need to be "up" to write a high-energy piece, choose some of your favorite tunes that always put you in a good mood. Alternatively, something somber may be just the ticket to write a sad or introspective section.

  11. Some tricks to help you set the mood in your writing. Use your other senses in a similar way. Smells are also great for evoking a feeling or mood. Smell is the one sense most strongly tied to memories. You can use this to your advantage by using candles, incense, room fresheners, or other scents to set a tone. If you're writing about the outdoors, for example, pick up a pine-scented candle to help you feel the setting.

  12. Some tricks to help you set the mood in your writing. Many writers use pictures to help them visualize a setting or character. Browse through magazines, postcards, historical records, and any other photos to help you describe your people and places. Just be sure to limit the time looking, as it's easy to become distracted and procrastinate on the writing part.
