  3. What is Perimeter? • Perimeter of a polygon is the distance around the outside of the polygon • Measured in linear units and is one dimensional • Each polygon has its own formula to find perimeter • Can be measured in feet, inches, yards, miles, or any other unit

  5. Perimeter of a Square • Can be determined by adding all four sides of the square together • Since a square has four equal length sides, you can use the formula Perimeter= 4*(length of one side) • Example: P= 4*2 inches =8 inches

  7. Perimeter of a Rectangle • Can be determined by adding all four sides together • Since a rectangle has two sets of equal length sides, you can use the formula: P=2*length + 2* width • Example: P = 2(8cm)+2(3cm) = 16cm+6cm = 22cm

  8. Perimeter of a Triangle • Can be determined by adding all three side lengths together • Example: P=9cm+5cm+11cm =25 cm • Special Case: If the triangle is equilateral (3 equal sides), then use the formula: P=3(length of a side)

  9. What is Area? • Area is a quantity expressing the size of a defined part of a surface, typically a region bounded by a closed curve. • Is measured in square units and is two dimensional • Each polygon has its own formula to find area • Can be measured in feet2 , inches2 , or any other units2

  11. Area of a Rectangle • Area = base * height • Example: A = 5 * 4 =20 units2 • Squares are special rectangles, in which case you can use the formula: A = base2 or A = height2 4 units 5 units

  13. Area of a Triangle • Area= ½ base * height • Triangles are ½ the size of a square, and therefore, the formula is base * height * ½ • Example: A = ½ (7)(12) = ½ (84) =42 units2

  14. Area of a Circle • A = pi * r2 • Pi is equal to approx. 3.14 • r is the radius of the circle, or the distance from the center point to any point on the edge of the circle • Example: A = 3.14 * (3 in)2 = 3.14 * 9 in2 = 28.26 in2
