  2. Area Area is the amount of square units needed to cover the face (or flat side) of a figure When the area is found, it is reported in square units.

  5. Perimeter Perimeter is the distance around the outside edge of a polygon When the perimeter is found, it is reported in units.

  6. Let’s find the perimeter of this surface. Count the number of units (or line segments) that are along the sides of this figure. Perimeter = 24 units

  7. Try this one! Count the number of units to determine the perimeter of this figure. The perimeter is equal to 12 units or P = 12 units.

  8. Family A Family B Let’s do these problems together. Two neighbors build swimming pools. This is what the pools look like. Which family has the pool with the bigger swimming area? A = ? A = ?

  9. Family A Family B The area of Family A’s pool is? 8 square units. The area of Family B’s pool is? 7 square units Therefore, Family A has the pool with the bigger swimming area.

  10. Family A Family B Now look at those same two pools. Which pool has a larger perimeter? The perimeter of Family A’s pool is 12 units long. P = 12 units The perimeter of Family B’s pool is 14 units long. P = 14 units Therefore, Family B’ pool has a larger perimeter
