  1. NOAA NERR Centralized Data Management Office

  2. Centralized Data Management Office • The Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO) was established in 1995 in support of the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System-wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) which involves 26 sites around the US and Puerto Rico in order to: • develop, implement and manage the basic infrastructure and data protocol of the NERR SWMP, and • support the assimilation and exchange of data and metadata within the NERRS framework

  3. CDMO priorities • The advancement of the System-wide Monitoring Program data and information management program • To maintain the online data and information server which provides access to data, metadata and derived products associated with all monitoring efforts http://cdmo.baruch.sc.edu • To provide technical support services via telephone, e-mail, and individual and group training to NERRS • The continuation of the CDMO Data Management Committee annual workshop to provide an additional avenue for the exchange of ideas and information related to database management, technological advances, and other data collection and monitoring program • The continuation of the annual Technician Training Workshop series to provide training to NERR technicians working on SWMP initiatives • Provide technical support for special NOAA projects and provide information for management and outreach support

  4. National Estuarine Research Reserve System Goal: Promoting stewardship of the Nation’s estuaries through science and education using a system of protected areas Purpose: To identify and track short-term variability and long-term changes in the integrity and biodiversity of representative estuarine ecosystems and coastal watersheds for the purpose of contributing to effective national, regional, and site specific coastal zone management Taken from the 2004 NERR Technician Training Workshop ERD presentation

  5. NERRS: A network of 26 reserves in 21 states and territories Taken from the 2004 NERR Technician Training Workshop ERD presentation

  6. NERR SWMP • The NERRS System-wide Monitoring Program has three phased components: • Abiotic factors: atmospheric, water quality and physical parameters • Biological monitoring • Watershed and land use classifications

  7. NERR SWMP data • Currently only abiotic data are submitted to the CDMO for review, archival and dissemination: • Physical water quality data • Water temperature, salinity, specific conductivity, percent saturation, dissolved oxygen, pH, depth, turbidity • Meteorological data • Air temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, LiCor, wind speed, wind direction, precipitation, battery • Nutrient data • Orthophosphate, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, nitrite+nitrate, chlorophyll

  8. Data load • Conservatively, the CDMO reviews, archives and disseminates: • 13.5 million data points per year for the water quality monitoring program (4 stations collecting 8 parameters every half-hour at 24 NERR) • 34.4 million data points per year for the meteorological monitoring program (1 station collecting 25 parameters quarterly, hourly and daily intervals at 24 NERR) • 31,104 data points per year for the nutrient monitoring program (4 stations collecting monthly grabs and 1 station collecting monthly diel of 6 parameters at 24 NERR)

  9. Data load • Conservatively, we receive 48.2 million data points per year from all the SWMP monitoring programs combined • To date, the CDMO has reviewed, archived and disseminated • 9 years of historical WQ data (1995-2004) • 3 years of historical MET data (2001-2004) • 2 years of historical NUT data (2002-2004)

  32. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • The NERRS was recently identified as a component of the IOOS national backbone. • In support of this effort, the NERRS is undertaking two significant efforts: • A metadata translation effort. • Implementation of telemetry for improved data delivery.

  33. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Metadata translation effort • Existing metadata is imported into the translation tool and stored into a database. • Software analyses the metadata and extracts information to create a translation to Meta-Door. • The final output of the conversion will be an XML file that will be imported into Meta-Door. • Meta-Door will in turn generate the FGDC compliant documents from the metadata.

  34. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Metadata translation effort • The conversion program will take the existing metadata and reformat it so that it can be imported into Meta-Door. • Meta-Door will then take the metadata and make it FGDC compliant.

  35. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Metadata translation effort • Start with text • End with XML

  36. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Metadata translation effort • And publish FGDC- compliant metadata

  37. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Improved data delivery • GOES telemetry systems are being installed for near real-time delivery of meteorological and water quality data.

  38. NERRS/CDMO IOOS Activities • Improved data delivery CDMO Weather and water quality stations
