  2. Born in Stonewall, Texas in 1908 • Johnson family has little money • He lived in a house with no electricity or running water • Lyndon learned about politics by listening to his fathers debates as a representative of Texas

  3. LBJ went to college and taught school in Cotulla, Texas. • The school he taught at had little money and most of the kids lived in poverty. • He bought the kids balls, bats, and gloves for school. • He made an impact on them.

  4. Johnson wanted to help with The Great Depression. • In 1931, he was asked to work for a member of Congress. He went to Washington, D.C. He learned how the government worked.

  5. In 1937, he ran for U.S. House of Reprentatives. He was elected and became the youngest member of Congress at age of 28. • He felt education was important and wanted to help people overcome poverty. • He was elected for Senator in 1948. • He helped fight against segregation. He helped passed civil rights laws

  6. The White House • In 1960, John F. Kennedy ran for President. He asked Johnson to run as his Vice President. They won the election. • Two years later, President Kennedy was killed and Johnson took over the Presidency. • He helped pass Civil Rights Act of 1964. It ended segregation throughout the United States.

  7. Johnson was reelected for President. • He created The Great Society Plan. This plan led to more spending on education, housing and health. • Johnson helped pass voting rights act that made it illegal for African Americans to take tests to vote. • He urged Congress to pass laws to help people get better medical care. He started preschool programs. • Johnson wanted to help end Vietnam war.

  8. REMEMBERING JOHNSON…. • Johnson did not re-run for election. He wanted to focus on trying to end the Vietnam war. • He left Washington, D.C. and moved back to Texas. • A museum was created in honor of him.

  9. A library and museum is in Austin, Texas where visitors can go to learn about him. It is called Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum • Johnson Space Science Center near Houston, TX honors his work for the space program.

  10. CHRACTER TRAITS OF LBJ Diligence means hard working. Johnson worked hard towards civil rights. Tolerance: respect for the values and beliefs of others. Johnson wanted to pass laws that supported tolerance of others. Respect for and acceptance of authority are people who believe leaders have the right to lead. Johnson helped Kennedy as a leader.
