  1. August-October 2014 Issue # 1 First Grade News COMMUNICATION Book of the month The book of the month for July and August is Yes Day! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld. This is a delightful book about the pleasure of having a Yes Day for children of all ages. How would you feel if you could have your very own Yes Day? What would you request include? Welcome Parents and Students to the 2014-2015 school year. We are excited to work and learn from each of you this school year. Parents communication is a key component to a successful school year. Please know that each teacher is available to discuss your child’s progress, answer questions, address concerns, or listen to suggestions. Please contact your child’s teacher by sending a written note with your child, schedule a conference, or send an e-mail. Reading & Math Milestones Reading Fluency: 30 wpm Phonics: Short vowels: vc, cvc, and word families Sight Words: 25+ Comprehension: 204 overall reading Lexile Level: 200 Lexile Math Foundation of Numbers 0-20 Addition and Subtraction up to 10 Time to the Hour Data Analysis 1st Nine Week OBJECTIVES Language Arts – Exchanging Ideas and Messages; Readers Read for a Purpose. Math – Foundation of Numbers 0 to20, Addition and Subtraction up to 10, Time to the Hour, and Data Analysis. Science – Investigating Properties and Patterns in Weather, Investigating Properties and Patterns, Investigating Force, Motion, and Energy. Social Studies – Relating to Others: Family & School, Celebrate Freedom Week, and Relating to Other: Citizenship. REMINDERS August 11th : Open House 4:00-6:00 August 14th & 15th: Fall Pictures-Uniform for Yearbook August 27th : Early Release (Students only) September 1st : Labor Day Holiday September 11th: Math & Technology Night 5:00-7:00 September 24th: Career Day & Early Release (Students only) September 26th: End of 1st Nine Weeks September 29th –Oct. 10th: Fall Intersession October 13th: 2nd Nine Weeks Begins October 20th: Student-Led/Report Cards 4:00-6:00 October 29th: Early Release (Students Only) October 31st: Fall Festival 4:30-7:30 MATERIALS Please ensure that your child read daily, brings his/her agenda, and homework daily.
